200 Hours to start instructor rating?
I have my CPL finished but I used some credit for total time from gliding. My total time is something like 190 do I need to do another 10 hours before I am able to start training for an instructor rating or would it be looked at similarly to the total time for my CPL?
Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
If TC allowed the same time credits as for the CPL, IMHO they wouldn't bother setting these hour requirements.(a) Before commencing flight training for the Class 4 Instructor Rating - Aeroplane, an applicant shall hold a Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence - Aeroplane and have completed either:
(i) a minimum of 200 hours total time including 20 hours instrument time, of which a minimum of 10 hours shall be instrument flight time; or

Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
From CAR 421.69:
I'm not sure about the 20 hour instrument time requirement, but it's my (unconfirmed) understanding that it's in place because of an old (before my time, so pre-90's) CPL licensing standard that didn't require as much instrument training.
Cheers!
This standard doesn't specify that the flight time be conducted in "aeroplanes", so up to 50 hours of glider time should count as specified in the CPL licensing standard (CAR 421.30(7)(b)(iii)). The 200 hour requirement would impact candidates who completed the integrated CPL(A) in less than 200 hours (CAR 426.75 allows for completion in as little as 150 hours). Note that because of (ii) above, candidates completing the CPL(A)/IR under CAR 426.75 can start the instructor course with only 190 hours.(a) Before commencing flight training for the Class 4 Instructor Rating - Aeroplane, an applicant shall hold a Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence - Aeroplane and have completed either:
(i) a minimum of 200 hours total time including 20 hours instrument time, of which a minimum of 10 hours shall be instrument flight time; or
(ii) the commercial pilot licence - aeroplane/instrument rating (CPL(A)/IR) integrated course.

Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
I started my instructor rating with 185 hours and a CPL. (Same thing with the glider credits.) Transport had no problem with it as long as I had the Commercial license.
Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
Do you mean you had 185 hours of total time, or 185 hours on aeroplanes with the remaining 15 made up in gliders?2namelt wrote:I started my instructor rating with 185 hours and a CPL. (Same thing with the glider credits.) Transport had no problem with it as long as I had the Commercial license.
You also could have started the groundschool prior to 200 hours (provided you had the CPL written and FT done) and picked up the flight training portion at 200 hours. From CAR 421.69:
If neither of these applies to you, it was an oversight by TC when they signed you off. Cross your fingers they don't catch it now. If they do, they're liable to yank your rating, have you make up the training shortfall, and redo the ride(b) Before commencing ground school instruction for the Class 4 Instructor Rating - Aeroplane, an applicant shall have successfully completed the written examination and flight test for the Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane.
Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
Thank you 2namelt thats what I was looking for.
Re: 200 Hours to start instructor rating?
I had meant 185 hours in Aeroplanes. I had 40 hours of glider PIC (and a GPL) which I used to make up the shortfall.Av_Av wrote:Do you mean you had 185 hours of total time, or 185 hours on aeroplanes with the remaining 15 made up in gliders?

From CAR 421.30 (7)(B)(iii)
Pilot Licence - Glider
If an applicant holds a Pilot Licence - Glider, a maximum of 50 hours flight time in gliders shall be credited towards the 200 hours total flight time requirement but this time shall not be credited towards the 100 hour pilot-in-command flight time.
