Porter plane, vehicle collide in Halifax
Aircraft was moving slowly and no one was hurt: CEO

A Porter Airlines plane sits at Halifax Stanfield International Airport early Monday.
Transport Canada officials are investigating a "minor" collision between a Porter Airlines plane and a service vehicle at the Halifax airport.

The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday as Flight 259 was approaching Gate 14 after arriving from Ottawa.

Porter CEO Robert Deluce said the plane was moving slowly when it struck the vehicle and no one was hurt.

"It was a relatively minor thing, but not something we obviously like to have happen under any circumstances," he told CBC News.

Deluce said he's waiting for transportation investigators to determine exactly what happened.

"Normally, that equipment is in fairly specified positions that don't allow it to come in contact with the aircraft," he said. "I really don't even want to speculate whether the equipment wasn't where it should have been or whether there were any other issues."

He said some passengers who were carrying on to St. John's left on a later flight, while others stayed in Halifax overnight.

The plane was still sitting at Gate 14 early Monday, leaving Halifax Stanfield International Airport with one less gate.

The gate was back in operation by noon.

According to a comment posted on the cbc website from someone who was apparently onboard, the aircraft taxied to the gate on only the right engine.... guess the hydraulic system is the same on the the DHC4 than the remainder of the DHC8 series..... either the SPUs were off or AC gens were not up to speed...
we'll see when the report comes out.

good thing nobody got hurt.... I always get nervous when aircraft are taxiing into the gate and the rampies are standing where the nose wheels should stop with thw chocks....... I kinda always think : what if it doesn't stop....

You drop the chocks and you run away from the plane.

By "off" it could have just been in feather to save fuel, pax don't always know the difference.

#2 was the engine that was operating. #1 was shut down.

Any news if Deluce is rushing out on the first Air Canada flight to console the passengers and crew? :D

Looks like the PD Ops group will be busy for the next few days "enhancing and/or optimizing" their flight schedules with what seemingly appears to be at least 1 u/s aircraft UFN.

From the pic on CBC.ca (and my years of airport op experience), I can only assume there never appeared to be a marshaller (at least in view of the flightdeck). That, or at the very least, proper hash marks were not identified.

I'd say bill it back to the contracted ground handler, but in this case it looks like PD people may be responsible.

Either way, it's always painful to see a bird with a crushed nose.

And you would be 100% Incorrect sir, at least about the marshaller and the probable cause.

its always bad when these things happen in the middle of the day with witnesses - much better to have mtce do it at 3am when no one is on the ramp to see it.
