Narrative: The Winnipeg Aviation (2003) Ltd. Cessna 152 aircraft
(C-GYAX) was on a VFR flight from Wawa Airport (CYXZ) to Sioux Lookout
Airport (CYXL). At 1815Z, C-GYAX was approximately 6NM southeast of
Sioux Lookout when the pilot reported that the aircraft was completely
out of fuel and that a forced landing would be performed. No prior
indication of low fuel was given. Commercial aircraft in the area
operated by Wasaya Airways and Bearskin Lake Air Services assisted by
locating C-GYAX and providing coordinates and road directions to the
crash site. The rescue team located the site and pulled the injured
pilot out of the plane at approximately 1910Z. Two Wasaya Airways
aircraft reported a continuous and strong ELT signal at 1828Z.Other
aircraft not involved in searching for C-GYAX did not experience any
delays at Sioux Lookout Airport.

Narrative: UPDATE Supplemental information received from J.R.C.C.
Trenton: Winnipeg ACC called to inform J.R.C.C. Trenton that C-GYAX
ran out of fuel and was down southeast of Sioux Lookout. The Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP), ambulance and fire department arrived on the
scene, extricated the injured pilot, and transported him to the
hospital.

Also, Wawa to Sioux Lookout isnt that bad of a flight, if you plan it well enough! I flew YAX from North Bay to Sault St Marie!

That's not bad, plenty of fuel stops enroute and 100 nm less than the Wawa - YXL leg.

Still, watch your fuel, plan and NEVER pass by fuel stops if you are thinking 'I should be able to make it.' you still need a (fuel) reserve.

I had to look.... POH152.. Range at 75% power (which was most likely being used) is 350nm (leaned mixture etc).

Line distance between the two is 308nm. That line takes you over the upper portion of Lake Superior. If this pilot was following rules, he/she would have had to go around (Add more miles).

I wonder if the Winnipeg crown prosecutor's office are going to go after him too.

Was he an international student? I have found that some of their decision making seems to be very suspect. Perhaps the flight school should be responsible. If the student has this poor decision making, I am sure the instructor would have seen it in previous lessons. Perhaps when stupid decisions like this happen schools (and the individual instructors) should be responsible.

I am assuming this was his 300NM trip. I wonder if TC would invalidate this and have him do a second attempt. Clearly the aim of the exercise was not achieved.

I changed flight schools from an uncontrolled AD in S. Ont to one with a tower simply due to a contract being awarded to that flight school which increased the number of students training in the uncontrolled airspace who knew no english and next to nothing of aviation english.

I know your pain. Although not being directly involved, I've heard some crazy things over the radio... and even worse crazy things from other pilots and instructors.

I dont think you'll escape the shock by simply flying out of a towered AD/Controlled Airspace, Just look what happens in and around CNC3! LOL

It ain't just the students at CNC3... Bad airmanship; some people just can't wait to take off. A number of times had to overshoot and execute go around because they hopped onto the runway thinking they would make it even with an aircraft on short final...

I flew YAX out of North Bay for a few months. Miss that plane. glad everyone is alright.

How did you like those controls ? lol

I needed to build up a tiny bit of time for the night rating via circuits out of CYYB and my wrists were aching after! Conversely, though, the faux autopilot was nice!
