I think it was $1600/mo including food, lodging and transportation in and out at the beginning and end of the season plus for a 1 week vacation.

Northern Alberta 1996, C-206 $2000/month, BN2 $2250/month. Seven days off or timex/month. Housing paid. No Food or transport "home". Lots of flying and pay was fine.

Great experience at the time (first float job) but wouldn't go back for any amount of money.

2002 DHC2 $3600/month accomodations covered, had to buy my own food (but usually ferried a lot of food in when I came back from 100 hour inspections in Thunder Bay). Would go back in a heart beat if work and family allowed for it, really enjoyed my stay (Webequie and Summer Beaver).

The cabin itself was wrapped in Tyvek to keep the wind from blowing right through it and after ol' "city boy" went home for the winter the roof started to leak when the wood stove melted the snow on top of the cabin. Ten minute walk to the school where there was an outdoor tap to fill up Jerry cans of water for cooking. Over to the Nursing Station for a shower once a week whether I needed one or not. Community members blasting through the front door like "Kramer" from Seinfeld at any time of the day or night looking for a "GOOD DEAL" to do a "SIDE TRIP".

Would I go back? Fu(k, NO!! Not for any kind of money... It was fine when North Shore was there to bake and joke around with, but being there by myself damaged my psyche permanently. I no longer value human life the way I used to. Other than my own of course.

For whatever kind of plane you'll be flying find out what your counterpart in a real community with beer and friends and a decent place to sleep could be getting paid, then add $1000/mo to that figure to live on the reserve. That might be reasonable for a short period of time.

I even tried a can of Klik once, too! Fried, with onions, mashed potatoes and gravy, and it still tasted terrible!

Klik fried in bannock strips is a specialty in the ywp coffee shop...it was definatly better than the bear jerky at 7am

yes... That was what I was thinking as well... $3000 sounds pretty reasonable these days... Maybe even more...

The year was 2010...DHC2 based in Northern ON. $4500/month, room + food included, internet/satellite tv, 3 weeks on 1 week off, plus a cash "bonus" at the end of the season for actually doing it. Would I do it again? Probably not, but I suppose I can tell my grand kids that I did it...

$4500.. Room and Board. no internet, no cable, but I at least had running water!! Ohh and I was in da Beav.

1994: Beaver, 25 cents per mile, $1200 month base pay, buy own food, Had to threaten drunken dock hand with a .30-.30 ( he had one too and found out I slept with mine ). Most legs 9 miles. 2 litres of milk $4.

I'd only go back if I were behind the controls of a armed nuclear bomber.

1997: St. Theresa Point, MB. C-185, about $2500 a month. I was working directly for the reserve itself. Free accomodations if you could call it that. No booze. I lived in the back of the little office building and when the Fall came and it got cold I moved into the old shack next door because it had a wood stove. No running water. There was an out-house that was beginning to sink into its own hole and was leaning over. Mud, garbage and filth everywhere. Old transmissions and car batteries littered the bay where the dock was. Showers were at the nursing station (about a mile walk) or when I got to take the plane to Selkirk for the inspections. They did pay about 120 a day in per diems when I took the plane there but you had to get your own hotel out of that. Always did my laundry in Selkirk too.
Would I do it again? Not in a million years! I'd love to fly floats again but it would have to be in a somewhat normal place like Red Lake, Kenora, Yellowknife or the BC coast, ....definitely not on a reserve!

If you are doing it for the money, then you are in the wrong line of work..I am not saying to do it for free, but don't be afraid to smell the flowers beside the road of life as you go along.

That is the exactly why you are living in a shack without heat and running water, getting paid below poverty wages and don't have any scheduled days off. Because of guys who fly along with a grin on there face, sniffing flowers without a care in the world about earning a decent living.
