There is no way they're smart enough to figure out their keyboards - makes you wonder how they're going to deal with their FMSs? Must be some curious convoluted routings being followed out there.

" makes you wonder how they're going to deal with their FMSs? Must be some curious convoluted routings being followed out there. "

Exactly what I have been thinking.

I have a very minimal formal education but I go to the dictionary quite frequently to check how to spell and check the meaning of words.

I am aware that this only a internet web site, however if you want to be a pilot one should at least take the time to use the proper words...The FMS will not correct your entry.

And if you wish to be treated with some respect as a pilot being careless is not a good start.

Now some of you can start to flame me. :D

saw this another thread (can't remember which one) but there is software you can download, it runs in your background and automatically spell checks any key strokes you make while browsing or works someway in that respect. Just search for spellchecker in the forum, it should come up.

No flames from me Cat, I agree completely! Spelling, punctuation, and the correct usage of words is important - just try sending in a cover letter with those kinds of errors to a HR department and see how far it gets.

And Cat, if you hadn't said so, I would never have guessed you didn't have a lot of "formal" education, which only goes to prove you don't need it to sound articulate and intelligent. It also tends to discredit the tired argument that "spelling and grammer don't matter, as long as you kin unnerstand what they was trying to say", etc etc...just looks sloppy and lazy. Not exactly pilot-like qualities, no?

Not saying errors don't happen, heck I make 'em, and typos and what have you. But I cannot fathom why so many people would settle for a level of written communication that would lead you to believe they were functionally illiterate. I realize not everyone was blessed with an English teacher for a mother :) but I swear the effort is worth it - intelligent people sit up and notice when you have a good ability to communicate.

Complex :

To be truthful I only received formal education to grade eight.

However that did give me the ability to read, write and do smple math. Early in my career at the airport I was fortunate enough to work with people who showed me that to suceed you must be able to communicate and to suceed to a higher level you must be able to communicate and show some glimmer of understanding of whatever subject the people whom you are trying to work for are interested in.

That got me to reading, reading gave me a thirst for more knowlege and somehow or another I just kept learning.

Now it is paying off because the people who have the wealth to buy the expensive toys that my partners and I work on and fly expect you to communicate at a reasonably intelligent level.

To be a true expert in communication you should be able to describe things in a fashion that will appeal to the higest in our culture and in the same breath explain it to the lowest in our culture...

...I think I communicate quite well with both extreems of society, in fact you can fuc.in count on it.

How about 'O' before 'R,' especially after 'F.'

it drives me crazy when people use the word 'seen' in the wrong context.
eg: I seen it. (no you didn't, you saw it)
that's all.

Well you guys are all considered Literature Scholars compared to the horrible use of the English language down in the Southern parts of the US. Dear god are these people for real?! I cringe half the time I hear these people speak and just want to beat them over the head with a mallet.

Hello, Catdriver, please don't take this the wrong way, as I always respect your posts and what you have to say.....and agree with the points you have made here, however thought I would play devil's advocate for a moment...

"I am aware that this only a internet web site, however if you want to be a pilot one should at least take the time to use the proper words...The FMS will not correct your entry"

this is from your post...

I before E except after C
Unless in ‘A’ as in Neighbor and Weigh
And all throughout the month of May
And you’ll always be wrong no matter what you say.

-Cruel English Teachers.

There, they’re, their Cat-man. It’s only going to get worse. It’s its own monster now.

I was driving around the other day and passed ‘Mary Brown’s Chicken ‘N Taters. What is ‘N? Tall ‘N Tasty, Big ‘N Juicy. I hate that!

I hope they’ll lose that loose talk one day, but I doubt it.

Driving by the Kentucky Fried Chicken one day (some years ago) I saw a banner hung on the side of the building saying, “Original recipe back. Now crispier and juicier.” Okay…. If it’s now crispier and juicer, then they have changed it and it is no longer the original recipe.

Fortunately you’re on your way to helping stem the tide Cat. Good luck. :D
