Best places you guys and gals have flown too
So I have bought up a plane to do my CPL time in and I now find myself staring at the maps thinking of were I want to go. The options seem pretty endless( kinda feels like when you get your first car). Im in the okanagan so i know there are lots of great places in BC to go.

What kind of plane? Fly to Whitehorse. It's an awesome trip.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself
Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
grumman traveller, ya a good haul north is in the works for next summer. I want to do one way south and one way way way north. See how far I cant get north. Bag of cloths a toothbrush and my fishing rod. doesnt get much better than that, beats flying 172's around the valley an hour at a time.

KEYW - Key West, Fl. Bring gf, fly in, rent a scooter, hit Duval St. Buy a t-shirt, have a nice meal, watch the sunset from Mallory Square, stay overnight, fly out next morning. Don't hit the Fat Albert cable.
KOSH - Oshkosh, WI. Last week in July. Do it at least once in your life. Fly in, camp the north 40, have a beer at Friar Tucks all sunburned with your feet aching.
MHLM - San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Not sure you could ever have as much fun as I have had there, but I thought I'd mention it.

Firstly, grats on getting yourself a Grumman. Look up the AYA (www.aya.org) and join up. Their next convention is Saint Simon's Island, Georgia, next year in May. That should give you quite the fun trip.
Depending on where you are in Canada, give the maritimes/Newfoundland a try. Absolutely beautiful flying out there.

Most beautiful; Sedona Arizona. Density altitude issues aside, it's often good weather, which is necessary for the view.
Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
Thumbs up for Sedona..

What year Traveller???? From another Grumman owner, don't forget to get a good checkout from a Traveller savvy instructor. I've seen too many collapsed nose gears as a result of PIOs on landing.

If I had my own plane I might just head south to witness either the very last takeoff or the very last landing of the Rockwell space shuttle orbiter.

Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
You will need the hours in any case. Find an aviation enthusiast friend or fellow student and start flying around. South in the winter, North in the summer. Going south from Kelowna, clear u.s. customs in Oroville or Yakima and get goin'. Within 6 hrs. flying time you should be in a completely different weather situation and then the possiblities are endless. Look into joining the BBP (Baja Bush Pilots) about 4000 members that fly all around Mexico all winter. If that is a little too much you still have all the U.S. southern states. Lots of airports, nav aids, flight following, good weather, etc. Big cities or small towns, resorts, and you can aircamp if you're set up for it.

Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
I dont think it will be to hard to a fellow student wanted to get the wheels up and head south. Getting into the states, maybe mexico is a definate. Be good practice getting south and flying in different a different country and states. Sure learn alot more than flying CYLW-CYKA-CYYF-CYLW. Find some nice bikini's and beaches on down the west coastPirate Pilot wrote:You will need the hours in any case. Find an aviation enthusiast friend or fellow student and start flying around. Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
Some of the most memorable trips I've done is to not have any particular final destination in mind... just a general direction. I would take out the map and plan just one leg at a time. I would pick a destination with a cool name or that might look interesting, gas up and go.
I did this when I first bought my Luscombe. I took 3 weeks vacation from work, threw a tent and a sleeping bag in the back and went exploring. I got stuck with weather for a couple of days and got to hang out with some pretty cool folks. I certainly learned a lot in that trip and I got to wonder why I took so long to make the decision to buy an airplane; I should have done it years before.
The next summer, my wife and I did a cross-country (Halifax to Vancouver). Now THAT was one great trip. No GPS, no VOR, no ADF... just map and compass. Just do it.

I was thiking Norman Wells in January or Wabasca Alberta, in February.
Seriously though Nome Alaska in July is an awsome trip.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

If you can organize some av-gas, then I suggest flying up to Baffin Island, through Iqaluit (CYFB) then on over to Pangnirtung (CYXP) through the fjord to Qikiktarjuaq (CYVM) then up the coast to Clyde River (CYCY) then onto Pond Inlet (CYIO) From there you could either continue north or head east to Greenland and down the Greenland coast...I might be biased though.

If I were located where you are, my summer trip would be up "the trench" to Watson Lake, YT. Fly around the South Nahanni River & Park - Virginia Falls, Rabbit Kettle, The Cirque and then head for Whitehorse (maybe north to Dawson City and then toward Anchorage / Matanuska Glacier / Knik Glacier / Valdez) or south - Skagaway and down the coast and home. Depends mostly on money, then time.
Along The Trench south of Watson Lake

Watson Lake Airport

South Nahanni River land at the "Bunny Bar"

Glacier Lake / Cirque of Unclimables in Nahanni Park

The Matanuska Glacier

Valdez

Biezeker Alberta! just kidding......
Red Deer Forestry Grass strip, just west of Sundre Alberta. Keep heading west till you fly over Lake Louise, then out to BC or Banff to YYC.
I've always wanted to load up the golf clubs and go to Kokanee Springs Golf course. They have a grass strip at Crawford Bay, which the golf course maintains.
Check out the COPA web site, they have a section called "Places to fly" with many of the Canadian GA airports listed, and aeral photos etc.
Take care, Fly safe in the mountains...

Thanks Sheephunter, That kinda trip seems right up my ally. I never thought about the COPA part, I am a member I might as well use it. I think a trip north is going to be in the books for sure. Go south in winter north in summer. seems like a good match. And perhaps a few trips to vegas just cause I can

Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
Seaside, Oregon, although it is better in summer.
The Nut Tree, Vacaville, California for the smell of eucalyptus and a great breakfast in the mall.
Make sure you have the Homeland Security stuff in order.

Siddley, I keep threatening to head over toward Labrador and the Torngats again. Haven't been for near 20 years. Would also like to get up into Pang and on up to Pond Inlet of which I have never been. Maybe this August, who knows? Anybody interested in doing this with me? Made it as far as Tasiujaq (CYTQ) this past summer and have only ever made it as far north as the Crater.

Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
I'm going to go with Sheephunter here. I've spent some time beetling around the Nahanni/Howard's pass area, and it's one of the most breathtaking places you can go. You wouldn't regret a trip out that way!
Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
anyone flown into barkerville? I went there years ago when I was a young feller, The elev. is 4060 so summer performance may be an issue. But seems like a great place to fly into. Fun weekender.
