The Shepherd
Time for my annual reminder! CBC will air The Shepherd on Christmas Eve at 18:30. It has become a ritual around our house to snuggle the whole family together with our 'Nogs and have a listen to this fantastic story about aviators, Christmas, and ghosts! If you haven't heard it, tune in!!
Merry Christmas, all...

Luckily, I am watching "Rita Macneil's Christmas" right now, so I will be able to squeeze "the Shepherd" in this year.
I love you Rita!! You're like a fine wine!

Folks:
A reminder .... "The Shepherd" is a radio show, not TV. ..... and is broadcast during "As It Happens," which begins at 18:30 local .... after "The World At Six."
So you'll have to drag yourself away from drooling over the beauty of Rita McNeil (puke) and turn on your good old fashioned radio, or ... listen on-line.

Hey Fogs,
Thanks a lot for posting up the file, that'll be a good one to keep. Now I never have to worry about missing my Rita!

Re: The Shepherd
I would pay money to watch Rita give Justin Bieber a good hug, with a close-up of his face as it disappears.
How long can Justin hold his breath? Tune in and find out!

"Within minutes of my going, the lights would die out, leaving only the huddled hangars, seeming hunched against the bitter night, the shrouded fighter planes, the sleeping fuel-bowser trucks, and, above them all, the single flickering station light, brilliant red above the black-and-white airfield, beating out in Morse code the name of the station -CELLE- to an unheeding sky."

Re: The Shepherd
It sure does Aileron .... there's just something about the type of distortion induced during the process of thermionic emission that makes the sound just that much more "homey" as it comes from a nice 12 inch speaker .... preferably with a field coil that acted as a choke for the power supply .... now that reference will confuse a whack of folks.
One year, I listened to "The Shepherd" on the ADF as I was flying an airplane load of teachers out of the north so they could enjoy Christmas with their families ... it seemed very timely and appropriate.
I wish I had been able to listen to it on my restored Marconi R1155 receiver which was used in much of the RAF and RCAF Bomber Command. http://website.lineone.net/~m0dzo/ex_government.htm

Re: The Shepherd
I first listened to this while driving with my girlfriend, through the dark towards Ottawa. It was Christmas Eve, and I was one of those Obsessed-With-Everything-and-Anything-Flying, new licensees.
We were flipping through stations when I heard "Vampire". We (Ahem, I) HAD to listen to it. We let the story unfold as we drove, and it gradually faded to static as we got farther from the transmitter. Attempts to raise it on another station were futile, so, disappointed, we arrived, and immediately pulled up a text on the web, and enjoyed the rest of the story.
It wasn't quite the same as hearing it with the static from the distant signal.
Nostaligia is 100% subjective, and this will always be a memory every bit as warm, and familiar as pine needles and egg nog. (and rum)

Re: The Shepherd
I sat & listened to The Shepherd last night as I do around Christmas each year. In addition to the excellent narrative I was struck by how sitting & listening to it by the tree differed so much to our usual evening in front of the blood & guts TV shows.
OFD, do you have any other links to these old broadcasts up your sleeve?

Ms Chicken:
I do have lots and lots of links to old radio shows.
We could start off with a link to a bit of "theatre of the mind" which may well seem familiar to you because of your times on the prairies .... "The Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen" which goes back to the early days of aviation in the mid to late thirties.
http://www.archive.org/details/TheAirAd ... JimmyAllen
The old radio shows are marvels of audio production, and were made to involve the listener's imagination during a time when the entire family would gather in the living room and listen to the large floor model radio. In the days before rural electrification, they would have dry cell battery power so it was a big deal to listen to a radio show since the function of the radio was primarily to obtain grain prices and newscasts.
I've had the privilege to know a fellow who used to produce a national series for the CBC for many years and he had a collection of hundreds and hundreds of disks transferred to cassette tapes ... really neat to listen episodes of Dragnet, Superman, Buck Rogers, Have Gun Will Travel, Gunsmoke, various detective shows, comedy like Our Miss Brooks, Amos & Andy, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy ... well the list is too long to carry on with.
They are great to listen to on a long drive.
A Google search for "old time radio" will turn up dozens of sites.
Here's one to get you started ... http://www.oldtimeradiofans.com/
I hope you enjoy the shows ....

Re: The Shepherd
I remember Theatre of the Mind, they used to run it on CHUM in SW Ontario on Sundays, I miss those days. XM/Sirius has an old-time radio channel as well. I get more out of that 12 dollar per month radio subscription than I do from my cable tv.
