YZF based airplane

Post by godsrcrazy »

A buddy called me and said that he heard that a YZF based plane went down south of YZF a couple days ago. I can't find anything on this. Is this true. If so they sure are doing a good job keeping it out of the media.

Our pilots overheard some radio chatter southwest of YZF between a Summit aircraft and another.
They were talkinig about circling and dropping a jacket down to someone.
A little later a helicopter went in and picked someone up.

It raised our curiousity.

Great job to the pilot for realizing he had to get on the ground and he didn't try to make it to the nearest airport. :smt023

What potential ignition sources are behind the rear cabin wall in an Aerostar? The battery? Anything else?

This was released on the CBC just a few days ago, not sure why it took this story so long to hit the press but i guess the pilot was Dave Mathison, the owner of Summit Air, good thing he survived because he is unbelievalble important to the success of Summit Air, glad he is alright.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/20 ... -fire.html

A Yellowknife pilot had a close call when he landed his burning plane and escaped just before it was engulfed in flames.

David Mathieson was flying to Fort St. John, B.C., on Dec. 22 when he made an emergency landing on a frozen lake not far from Yellowknife, according to a Transport Canada civil aviation report.

Mathieson, who is president and chief pilot of Summit Air in the N.W.T. capital, had noticed fumes and smoke coming from the back of the privately owned Piper PA-60 Aerostar plane he was flying.

After he depressurized the cabin and opened the aircraft's door, Mathieson made the forced landing on Falaise Lake, located 120 kilometres southwest of Yellowknife, according to the Transport Canada report.

As soon as Mathieson got out of the aircraft, it went up in flames and was destroyed. He was not injured and was later rescued by helicopter, according to the report.

Contacted by phone in Bogota, Colombia, Mathieson told CBC News that an electrical malfunction caused the fire.

It's not the first time Mathieson, an aspiring stunt pilot, has had a brush with fate. In late July, he was practising aerial stunts for the Yellowknife Airshow when his plane experienced serious mechanical issues.

In that case, the aircraft's elevator — a mechanism that controls the plane's ability to go nose-up and nose-down — stopped working. Mathieson said he considered bailing from the plane, but another pilot advised him to try landing it instead, which he did.

Sorry God's can't let that one go.

"Two hard working people," perhaps. But two people have caused more stress and grief than a person can grasp. Why they left YXY in the first place is a good spot to start. They conducted business in a manner that is not respectable on any level, to staff, to customers, to competitors, you name it.

Did they do some interesting work? Yes. Did they work hard as you say? Yes. Were they people who conducted themselves morally or ethically? Not on your life.

And before you ask, yes, I know very well the facts, almost all of them.

Sorry for the brief Hijack, but some things need to be see straight.

Fair enough, I know nothing "Super Dave," other than the idiot in Evil Knievel outfits in the 80's. I was merely commenting the previous ownership which was the personification of pretty much everything at issue in Canadian aviation at an Air Taxi level. Have a good weekend!

Well I have to put my 5 cents in....
I worked for Summit Air from 2003 to 2007 and have to disagree with your statements...

They were a good company to work for, we and customers were treated great, pay was good and it was a great job environment.
So yes, please get your facts straight. Stop listening to people who don't know what's going on.
Even at my current job, there is too much bitching and complaining going on, but I guess that's what most new pilots like to do.

Thanks
