Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
I was at the airport when this happened and thanks to the quick response of both the WAC staff and the local emergency services the individual was taken care of and on his way in an extremly timely manner. Just goes to show you can never be too careful around props moving or not.

Hahaha that was one of the first things I've seen on this forum that made me actually laugh out loud.

Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
Understatement of the year. When the man started the plane, it "moved slightly on its own" striking him on the back with the propeller, Simpson said.
Simpson said the man was still able to shut the engine off after being struck. His injuries are not life-threatening, though he is likely in "considerable pain," he added.
The guy should be proud, I haven't heard of even . Norris winning a game of chicken with an airplane.
Hope he recovers ok!

Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
I'm a distant acquaintance of a guy who fell off the back of a boat when the outboard that he was struggling to start suddenly did so. 'Dopey' fell head first over the transom, and the boat, due to a sticky throttle, went around in a circle. I walked into emergency with another friend on a completely unrelated matter, and there was 'Dopey', on a gurney, getting the 'tiger stripes' on his leg stitched up after he failed to get out of the way of the boat in time!
Not really a laughing matter, but I can see the humourous side of that..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

A friend of mine was learning how to throw a boomerang. Couldn't quite get the hang of it.
Then finally gave it one last try.
Damn thing came right back and hit him right between the eyes.
5 stitches.

There's a local legend here, of a rampie that took a dash prop in the head 15 years or so ago. Just shutdown, spinning down and he was a little to quick to chock.
Story says, he was wearing those big puffy ear muff style, and they took the brunt of the impact, he got up and nearly walked away. No serious injuries.
Can't personally attest truth or fable, but a friend that worked the ramp at the time swears it's true.
Funniest one by far was the poor bastard ramp manager with a toupee that got too close during a cross-bleed start, I think it was? he went home a few ounces light.

That reminds my of a story that happened at KFC. I didn't witness the incident, but was there when it happened and got first hand info from those who did witness it.Topspin wrote: Funniest one by far was the poor bastard ramp manager with a toupee that got too close during a cross-bleed start, I think it was? he went home a few ounces light.
Evening shift is underway and a 727 is out on the ramp ready for power runs. This senior apprentice decides that it would be a good idea to watch the engines light off in the darkness, so he gets a scissor lift, parks it a fair distance behind the aircraft, and elevates it so he can see down the tail pipe. Engines light off and in a few minutes he is yelling because he is getting singed by the exhaust. He tries to get the lift started (gas powered) but in typical KFC fashion it won't start without a little love or a lot of persuasion. Next, he is scrambling under the railing and jumping off trying to away from the heat, abandoning the scissor lift to its fate...

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Does he have to return the certificate should he be unlucky in the future?KK7 wrote:Beefitarian wrote:I've never been hit by a prop.
Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
My Dad has a stitch scar on his right arm that starts from the shoulder to his forearm
While propping an aircraft during WW2 he lost his balance as the engine started.
The prop hit him and broke his arm is two places.
He says all he remembers was all of a sudden he is sitting on the ground and his buddy trying to check him.Does not remember the impact at all.
This thread also reminds me of a guy in my area.
Owned a strip and a Cherokee,. His neighbour use to cut the strip for him. One day he flies home and see the guy on the riding mower , decides to buzz him to scare him. Ended up cutting his head off with the a/c (no crash)
The pilot ended up doing time for man slaughter . Year later he was doing a compression check on a J3 and the prop kicked back striking him on the head and killing him
Life sure can be strange

Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
I worked with a guy at YVR who got hit by a prop. A Horizon Q400 had pulled in and when he attached the groundpower he stepped back rather than to the side and got smacked by the prop as it was spooling down. He was airlifted to hospital and turned out to be OK, he walks with a bit of a limp. Anyone who has seen the Horizon Training video has seen his story.
Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
That's a long way to step back... The Ground power on a Q is right under the captains window.
Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
another reason why if I ever see ramp guys walking around the plane to always treat the props as if they are moving and walk around them just forms good habits.
as for the guy getting hit in the head with the prop during the compression test could someone not seeing that turn into a workplace health and safety thing and end up with all mechanics having to wear a helmet lol

Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
I wasn't originally going to 'go there' and have the thread drift too far off topic; but I was once told a story about a very nasty (fatal) prop strike by an ex-airforce guy.
Not sure of it's true, or if I remember all of the details, but essentially the crew of an RCAF maritime patrol aircraft (I believe he flew on the Argus) watched helplessly as a ground crew member walked backwards into a prop while distracted by something else ... marshaling another aircraft or some such thing.
The message being to watch out for complacency. Work in close proximity to dangerous things for too long, and you start to get a bit too comfortable.

Re: Man struck by propeller at airport
mostly happens pulling power cart or crew chief yelling for your attention
was with terry onboard air sask j31 in yxe and had to watch ground crew
a girl pilot if not mistaken turn around after hauling power cart and assoc. cables
just in time prop turning twelve inches from her nose the number one engine spooling down
terry was yelling in cockpit trying to open window at same time
