How to squish a pic down to avatar size ??

Just curious if anyone could explain to a computer illiterate like me how to shrink a picture file down to avatar size? What is the best program to use, and also what is the best type of file?

Decent software, easy to use, functional. Just have to resize it to the proper size and filesize.

For your own pic's you can use "picasa"...without two much effort you should be able to easily shrink it.
If you'd like something else you can find a nice avatar here

No need to install software - there are web sites that do this. Google "image resize" and you'll find some. http://www.picresize.com looks like it'll work.

I just used microsoft paint and kept reducing the size of the image until it would upload.
