The main runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport is about to be lengthened at a cost of $28 million.
The extension — from 2,682 metres to 3,200 metres — will allow the airport to handle larger wide-body and heavy aircraft.
The federal and Nova Scotia governments are contributing half the money toward the project, while the airport authority will look after the rest.
"The extension of our main runway will provide Nova Scotia with new economic development opportunities, particularly in the air cargo sector," Tom Ruth, president and CEO of the airport authority said in a release.
Nova Scotia's share is $5 million while Transport Canada is in for $9 million.
In 2009, the airport moved 29,000 tonnes of cargo.
Over the next decade, air cargo traffic is forecast to grow by between 85 per cent and 130 per cent.

Actually they need the length more. Emirates wants to bring the A380 to YFC, YQM and YHZ next.

With a BC on 32 and not an RNAV.
But the mins were almost ILS.
Nothin like hand bombin' it in at 300 agl and a 40 kt crosswind!

TC is in for $9 million eh? So how much are they in for YYC's parallel 16/34?
Re: Longer runway for Halifax airport
earlier in the article it mentions that the feds, province and airport are the groups putting up the cash...i wonder if it is specifically TC that is doing it or if the article inst quite accurate?Lowjack wrote:TC is in for $9 million eh? So how much are they in for YYC's parallel 16/34?
Re: Longer runway for Halifax airport
I ask because to my knowledge the Feds are not putting any money in for the parallel at YYC.

Re: Longer runway for Halifax airport
I'm sure the Calgary Airport Authority has collected enough taxes from passengers to pay cash for that one.Lowjack wrote:TC is in for $9 million eh? So how much are they in for YYC's parallel 16/34?
I'll echo my above statements and say they should install an ILS to R25 first.ILS26_Steep wrote:They should put a CAT2 into Ottawa.
