Commercial license lets you be PIC on a single-pilot airplane or f/o on a multi-crew airplane.
ATPL lets you be PIC on a multi-crew airplane.

Is the Metro 3 (SW3) technically a high performance aircraft, allowing the holder of a CPL and an appropriate rating to sit in the left seat? Not saying it's necessarily a good idea...but it could happen.

Metro 3 is a two crew aircraft, meaning the captain needs ATPL.

Metro 2 on the other hand... Yes. A fresh 200 hour pilot can PIC that baby.

its not because a metro 3 is high performance it's because it is over 12 500lbs and therefore classified as a "large" aircraft where as a metro 2 is 12 500 and under, metro 2's are still high performance hence the reason for a type rating required on them

12500 means nothing fish4life. As BEFAN5 said you need an ATPL to be PIC on a multi-crew aircraft.

You can fly it privately with a Private Licence if you have the $$$$. That is where "owner - operators" come from.

I was always confused by who needed ATPL, etc. Then I came to realize, that weight and size has nothing to do with it. It is all in the crew requirements.

Not to nit pick, but never heard of a Metro 4 or a metro 3 (sw3)

Metro III - SA227AC/BC (SW4)
Metro 23- SA227 CC/DC (SW5) Both also Merlin IV's...

Metro 5, never went anywhere..... The upgraded 23 got the name from FAR part 23....

actually early model metro 2's were designated merlin IV's after a certain point they were changed to the metro designation. The easiest way to tell is the Merlin IV's had round windows where as the Metro 2's and 3's had more "modern" rectangle - oval shaped windows
