Twr vs Gnd vis
Question:
An awos station is reporting say 1 sm which in this case would impose an approach ban for the airport, however tower reported vis is 1 3/4 sm and would not impose an approach ban.
Can the Tower vis override the awos vis?

Manops 314.2
If an IFR aircraft is conducting an approach to
land or requests taxi authorization while any
airport RVR or the ground visibility is less than
the highest runway visibility minimum for the
airport as specified in the CFS, take the
following actions: (N)(R)
A. ensure that the aircraft has received all
current RVR and ground visibility
information; (N)(R
B. issue landing clearance or taxi authorization
if traffic and airport conditions permit; and
(R)
C. unless the operation is conducted in
accordance with an RVOP or LVOP
complete an aviation occurrence report,
once the aircraft has departed or taxied to its
destination on the airport. (N)(R)
The note for A states:
314.2 A. Note:
Ground visibility may be the prevailing visibility as
included in the current weather sequence or as
observed by an airport controller.

Re: Twr vs Gnd vis
Yes I think so. I have been inbound to an airport and the vis drops below the app ban via an awos/atis however we call up tower and they say the tower reported vis is above the approach ban limits while the awos is still reporting below the limit of the approach ban. I just wanted to know if I am in violation if we try an approach. We opted to go to our alternate to play it on the safe side.

I wanted to ask but figured its not he right time to do so... and it was busy, no harm no foul
Re: Twr vs Gnd vis
Sorry guys, I can't really respond to you without names of airdromes. As for YMM isn't that a fictishious tower that tried to kill a 1900 crew. I thought they were going to kibosh the YMM virtual tower after that incedent

SII: CYMM is a real tower, with real live controllers, not "fictishious" as you say. The virtual, or remote tower technology was researched, but found to be not ready for application; the decision to not use it had nothing to do with any incident. No one at CYMM FSS or Tower (and I would go so far as to say in all of Nav Canada, or Transport Canada back in the day) has ever, to the best of my knowledge, tried to kill anyone. I'm also sure that 99.9% of all pilots who've ever had an accident or incident never tried to kill anyone either. I realize it was an off the cuff remark, but I take offense at the notion that anyone on either side of the radio would be so careless with the lives and property they're entrusted with.
