This is Grade 8 math folks....
Oh yeah, we are dealing with pilots who can't even handle adding decimals together correctly.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Re: 48÷2(9+3)
The above would be correct IF the initial expression were as follows:
48 ÷ (2(9+3)) = 2
48÷2(9+3) = 48 ÷ 2 x 12 = 48 x 12 = 288 = (48(12))/2
BEDMAS people
48 ÷ (2(9+3)) = 2
48÷2(9+3) = 48 ÷ 2 x 12 = 48 x 12 = 288 = (48(12))/2

And this one little thread shows the arguement that
Association of Proffesional Pilots < College of Physicians
especially since pilots are supposed to be able to do simple math.
(hows that for stirring the pot)
P.S - Order of Operations is Grade 4 math - are you smarter than a 10 year old?

Explain how we're wrong? So it should be read as 48 / 2 * 11? I did 48 / (2 * 11) since division and multiplication could be done in any order, or at least that's how I was told in school. In strict computer language terms, wouldn't it be 288 all the time since it does the part in round brackets then read it left to right?

First of all, please don't tell me you just added 9 and 3 and got a sum of 11.moocow wrote:Explain how we're wrong? So it should be read as 48 / 2 * 11? Second of all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commutativity
You're saying that (x/y)*z = x/(y*z) holds true for any values of x, y and z, which is not true.

Anyone who can not compete this simple problem was skipping school at far too young of an age.
Of course, you could also argue the fact that it's "been so long."

Right so it's: 48/2x(9+3) = 24 x (9+3) = 24x12 =288paddy wrote:It's 2

Come on people, really?? This has to be a joke!!
Re: 48÷2(9+3)
2(9+3) is the lazy mathematician way of writing (2x9 +2x3). Then you divide 48 by that answer.

Re: 48÷2(9+3)
48 / 2 * (9 + 3)
= 48 / 2 * 12
= 24 * 12
= 288
I can't believe half the people who have voted think the answer is 2.

= 48 / 2 * 12
= 24 * 12
= 288

Re: 48÷2(9+3)
The equation isn't 48/2 x (9+3)
The equation is 48/ 2(9+3)
The equation is 48/ 2(9+3)
