New Pope

Post by greenwich »

The new Pope was just presented to the public...and he's 78 years old!

With all due respect to the Catholic Church, why such an old Pope? Pope John Paul II was virtually useless in his last 5-10 years as Pope due to his age...and now the new Pope's 78!

WTF

Has there ever been a female Pope or is that just not how it goes?

There will probably be a new Pope within 5-8 years. This guy is old (78), and this is one of the reasons why they chose him. They want to see shorter terms, as JP2 was in office for a very long time.

And no C-FOXY, there has never been a female Pope. Will the current Pope change their teachings on female ordination? I highly doubt it. Should they? That is another can of worms altogether! It will be interesting to see whether or not this Pope follows in JP2's footsteps- I think he will, as Ratzinger was JP2's closest man throughout most of his papacy.

wassup FOXY hows the north treating you these days?
nope there has never been a female pope, nor will there be. The (orthodox) catholic church is about as sexist as it gets.

Cheers.

The papacy has stayed away from women for hundreds of years. In fact Popes used to be married. One of the last, if not the last you may have heard of; his last name was Borgia, seems to me his daughter Lucretia achieved some local fame, coincidence?

"Schooled in the Nazis' power of rhetoric during his childhood in Bavaria, the Pope later deserted the German Army during World War II, only to be sent to a POW camp when the Allies reached his hometown."

At the time, every youth was required to be in the Hitler Youth.

He has very forward thinking ideologies  such as still not condoning the use of contraceptives ( I guess he'll take care of all the unwanted children and AIDS victims in Africa and elsewhere?),and how about this one! NO counselling for pregnant teens! Ha! That should really benefit society. Oh yes, don't forget this little doozie! "catholicism is the ONLY REAL religion" I heard this on the news last night and it seems some of his policies are a little outdated. I don't in any way wish to criticize anyone's religion but couldn't help thinking this guy may not be keeping up with the times!

.

Big mistake to pick such a front-. with well-known views, especially one who has already wielded significant power on the organization for many years.

May be the way to pick a President or Prime Minister, but this is not supposed to be a political kind of office.

Good Popes are dragged in from the back-benches, kicking and screaming....more in tune with the human condition than with administrative process. If they need a Cardinal Ratzinger to do some dirty work for them, one will always surface.

Personally, I don't think Jesus would have made this choice.

I think the reason for the new pope being so old is that he's a puppet. Unfortunate but true. you take a look at those cardinals in their "expensive red suites" does this not scream politics? They "elected" a new pope in one day. Albeit they say through prayer but do you really think there is an honest ajenda among one of the world's most powerful and richest churches? It's like the president. You need someone on the front line who'll take the fall if and when @#$% starts to come down. It always does just a matter of when.

If you read the bio on this guy, its a lot more likely that he has been pulling the strings all these past years. And that this election was a birthday present for all those years of running the show.

I agree, he has quite the dark eyes. and not because it was bad ink.
As for being it's the only religion I find it funny that religions older than catholisim have a much humbler approach in that they are quite aware of others and even agree that it is important for all different kinds to be here. I think it's important for the catholic church to be here as I do for all others. But I also think that we are about to embark on a whole new era that is going to see history making changes. We live in modern society and if you don't move forward, well.....But I guess in the words of a wise man "we shall see what we shall see" :smt031
