BAE : Bring Another Engine

There was talk of a large engine conversion project to convert some of the 146's scattered around yyc from civilian use to something more useful to those military chaps.

The 146-200 is a great airplane except for those engines, jazz averaged 10 unscheduled engines per year (40 engines in fleet). Similar engine as the original challenger (600). It is also hard on fuel for an 85 seat airplane. It's like comparing the the Dash 7 to DASH 8, great airplane in it is time period but that has passed.

Can also operate into gravel and 4000 ft strips.

Anyone know the typical fuel burn for a 146?

There are several Air Tanker companies in the US working on developing the -146 as a platform for
aerial fire suppression. Rumor has it that one Canadian Air Tanker company is also looking at the -146 for the same purpose.

Ha, the plane with 5 APUs!

But I always thought they were a cool jet and a really good performer!

The ALF 502 was first developed as a modular tank engine and then later for the CL 600.

The joke was after you said 502 was to put your forefingers up in a cross like when fending off a werewolf or vampire.
what was that mod to it, the L2C or something similar.

Tanker conversion was done already a few years ago in PEI.

"Done" is a relative term. They claimed it was done, but it doesn't work worth crap. As of last fall, it was back for modifications.

Why does it have 4 engines?

Because they couldn't fit 6 engines on the wings

Really?

I wonder why Greenland Air still operates theirs. Trans Capital? US Army? Ok even Voyageur (of course they do have -8's). And let's not forget Air Tindi (2 or 3?).

There is still a time and a place for the -7.

And as far as the Avro RJ's go Lufthansa is offering a few of theirs (with 507 engines) fresh from heavy checks (retired to make way for new CRJ's). And just how much is a new CRJ 700/900?

Want to see old BAE's in operation? Go to Bolivia (for one).

Why Bolivia? The Avro is certified for high altitude airports (the same can't be said for the Dash 8 - at least not for the time being).

Don't forget a four engine plane can still do a three engine ferry flight.

Yes there is a time and a place for everything. Right now it all depends on who is paying for fuel.

Performance history aside, does anyone have any details about NC operating a 146. Don't ask the obvious 'why?' but I've always wanted to fly a 146. I'm assuming it'll be a rig machine, but maybe they have other plans...

The word is they have purchased 2x BAE146-200 sitting at BAE in the UK. Supposedly.....online in November. We'll see if that happens.

Suncor doesn't fly into gravel. How much does a new or even used RJ cost?

I would imagine a CRJ-200 would be an easy pick up, since a lot of regionals are looking to park them, replacing them with more fuel efficient -7 and 900 series.

Cariboo's specialty is going places most others can't ie: 5000' minus gravel strips. So I can't see an RJ working for them.

5000 feet of gravel is impossible with a CRJ100/200. A BAe146 on the other hand might take 85 folks into such a strip. That would give North Cariboo something only the old B737-200 with a gravel kit could do. Anyone I have ever spoken to that flew the 146 just loved it.
