That's why I wanted to see what the winds were actually doing. 40+ X-wind component exceeds A340 limitations (yes, yes I know it is a demonstrated speed). Plus the one paper claims that the winds were 149km/hr. Just selling papers on fear. The Fish wrote:Don't have the metar,
but I landed about 5 mins ahead of the Lufthansa 340, and the last i remember from the tower was 30 gusting 52, direction was 220.
We took 25 and the 340 took 28, he easily had 40+ on the beam!! Good job in the end!!
Cheers

No, I'm not and can't.yycflyguy wrote:Can someone smarter than me post the METAR's for YYC from November 27th during the peak of the wind storm.
36 knots gusting 49 is nasty but I still say the people that are reporting should not be crying or making it out to be some near catastrophic disaster. It wasn't even an ice storm.Updated at 8:00 PM GMT on November 27, 2011 (1:00 PM MST): METAR CYYC 272000Z 25036G49KT 20SM FEW160 SCT180 BKN210 13/M04 A2947 ... CLOUDS: CLEAR WX BECOMING FROM 02Z
Did that paper claim they were at the airport? Those winds were reported at the top of the Calgary Tower downtown and were what blew out windows in the office buildings.yycflyguy wrote:Plus the one paper claims that the winds were 149km/hr. Just selling papers on fear.

Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Perhaps you could enlighten me on how to do it for the future?jschnurr wrote:sureyycflyguy wrote:Can someone smarter than me post the METAR's for YYC from November 27th during the peak of the wind storm.

Um, yeah. Thanks. Perhaps they were standing on top of Mt Yamnuska too. Normally planes don't land on top of the Calgary Tower or Mt Yamnuska. Here is the headline of the paper (National Post) I was questioning.kevenv wrote:Did that paper claim they were at the airport? Sorta implies at the airport dontchathink.Lufthansa flight makes dramatic landing in 149km/h Calgary windstorm

Yep.Is it because the engines are so low-slung they can't put a wing down, or some other reason?

It turns out you're right. A quick check on the internet reveals that the 747, which I thought had swivelling bogies, only has them for ground steering, not for landing. The B-52 has real x-wind gear, and the C-17 used to but doesn't anymore because it was a maintenance problem. Oh well.Nark wrote:Yep.Is it because the engines are so low-slung they can't put a wing down, or some other reason?
I don't think many large transport category aircraft that have bogey's that swivel.
You mean, the poor things might have to actually maintain/fix the thing. That's what you get for buying airplanes with "moving" parts!frozen solid wrote:C-17 used to but doesn't anymore because it was a maintenance problem. Oh well.
