Who's been to Resolute?

So, apparently I am heading up to Resolute next week for a month or so.

Can anyone offer some idea of what the wx will be like for may/june?

I am assuming it is a dry town...can anyone confirm that?

What to do during down time?

Never flown up in the St. Press. region before, so any insight w.r.t that would be appreciated as well.

Any and all comments welcome!

Resolute used to have a bar many years ago.

Just Courious will be one of the guys who would know what it is like now, but be careful with the local girls.

A lot either have TB or VD so it is wise to only jump the ones that cough and don't kiss them..

Have fun as there will be lots of daylight....

In the summer, everyone either fishes or fornicates. In the winter it is too cold to fish. Treat the blueberry blondes with respect. They are people too.

Sometimes it is cold snowy fooggy and windy, but sometimes it's bad too.

You can bring your own but put it in a nalgene bottel so it doesn't break and you won't cry. Don't bring beer. Too heavy.

What to do during down time?

Take a zillion pictures, learn to cook at least one good crew meal for 12. Before you go. Walk to the dump watch for bears. Read your SOPs. Lots.

Set GPS in true. Take off in true, local altimeter. Level off in true, and 2992. Land in True, and local altimeter. Sometimes you fly in Grid. Read your SOPs. Set your compass with Astro compass (Hint: it's in your SOPs

)
Get and bring Arctic Canada from the Air; Dunbar & Greenaway; DRB, 1956 at a used bookstore. Bring Maps: Resolute, Hazen, Devon, Ellesmere, alert.
Write down every set of coordinates for food fuel and shelter as well as landing in your book and on your maps.
Bring a fleecr, wind-blocker gloves & hat, hiking boots, two pairs of sunglasses. Snowgoose parkas are carried by the vets year round.

Did we mention those SOPs?

New York- Resolute, not much difference...

What Just Curious said, and really watch the weather. Enjoy the sunshine buddy.

We got done in Kugluktuk nice and quick before things thawed.

resolute....memories of bringing up booze for my friends based there to ease the pain of being in Resolute....

Ahhh Resolute.... a great place. Was in there last week. The car's operator says July is the worst weather month with fog fog and more fog.

If your GPS certified learn to set your heading by checking your true bearing to an NDB on your gps and then setting your adf to show the same BTS as the gps indicates. This will give you a very accurate hdg. Learned this form a military check pilot. Just don't make the mistake of using a vor for this purpose, or you could be in a world of hurt.[/u]

hey slayer....good trick with the ADF...

i'll have to bring the newspapers from my front steps though, as i am ferrying the aircraft up there. that means i CAN bring beer!!! Wha-hooo!!! also probably bring a single malt for those foggy days sitting watching the atv's buzz by.

Anyone know when the ice breaks up?

Don't worry about using the ILS in the great foggy season. Has a tendancy to stop working when there is moisture in the air. And it will break for around a month or so, having said that, know some good ndb and gps tricks. The Co-Op is almost always out of food, might have a chocholate bar or two, for a few dollars, and your left leg. If you're bringing some wobbley pops, bring some to share with your co-workers, they'll love you forever.

IF you're ferrying... bring Herc straps barrel hooks, make sure the airplane has all it's tiedown rings, and a barrel ramp.

When some well-intentioned bonehead in HQ tells you you won't need all that, and that they have all that in YRB tell them politely to pound sand. There's never enough of that stuff, and nobody operates a lending service.

If you're bringing treats, see the cash before you offload it. A word to the wise as it were...

Char season should be opening up soon, and there are a couple of good fishing spots within an hours flight time of YRB, Creswell Bay comes to mind....

which one is the pixie lure?

A 'pixie' is a silver colored spoon type lure with a neon pink, orange or green colored plastic egg sack in the middle of the lure, most places CDN Tire, Wallymart, Sears will carry them.....

You have to register booze you bring up hence the Nalgene remark, and 'bringing it up for friends' is likely gonna see it confiscated.

fixed.....but now we are actually reconsidering basing in Nanisivik due to client's whims......still not sure.
