Never fly a plane without my scuba dive computer. Seriously I haven't worn a watch in 5 years I have 3 different things in the cockpit that tell me the time and the company blackberry strapped to my hip and we are getting Ipads. watches are just obsolete.

Yup, it's not a real watch unless it loses or gains as much in a day as a cheap Timex does in a year. Or is only right twice a day if you forget to wind it.

Only a hundred times the price of a Timex too. :D

A cheap Timex usually keeps time better than the most accurate Rolex. And fairly durable too, I put a new battery in my Timex indiglo every seven years. It's on its fourth battery now and runs like a ...watch.

Wow...that is a nice watch.. At a deeply discounted price of $185 it can pretty much do everything a Timex expedition can do for $39.00...A real bargin.

OK....I am going to say it....The Timex , indiglo Expedition watch is the best aviation watch around...period..

You can read it in the dark (lights up) cockpit. Real numbers that you can just glance at and read.
And it tells time. Yep...tell the actual time..

Quite seriously, the only pilots who ever seem to disagree are the brand lovers who believe that the name on the watch tells people something about you. I agree it does, but maybe not in the way they perceive it. Never saw a pilot in the last 40 years use the tachometer function. And if you dont have at least three other methods of timing in your cockpit these days, do what we used to do....buy a stopwatch and mount it on the control column.

Now I await the watchly enchanced to tell me about serious navigation or wanting to look nice....

I've never understood the "pilot watch" idea. A few years ago my father-in-law (not a pilot) got some kind of large, fancy shiny thing that had a rate/quantity ring on the outside. He thought it was the coolest thing in the world - "you can predict what time you'll arrive!" - so I didn't have the heart to tell him I thought it was mostly just a gimmick.

There are lots of pretty nice watches that are marketed this way, don't get me wrong. I just never really bought into the idea that they're more useful than any other (cheaper) means of keeping time.

Why the fack does everyone need a nice shiny 400 dollar watch? I went to wal mart, spend 25 bucks for a digi-watch that I've been very happy with ever since.

What exactly is a quality timepiece? There are only a handful of companies that actually make the innards (movements) of a watch, and the rest is just the different companies putting the innards in different cases. The technical term is co-branding.
For example, Swatch makes the innards for some very expensive timepieces...So you can buy a swatch, or you can buy a much more expensive "quality" name brand that, in fact, other than the case and any assoicated bling, is the same quality as a Swatch... In fact, some brands change who builds the innards from time to time, so you can buy the same watch with verying quality. The quality is in the buyers eye, and companies spend huge amounts of money advertising to convince people of the exclusive nature of their quality watches.
In 2001, Burberry made a deal with the Swiss division of Fossil to make Burberry watches for world-wide distribution. Some people now feel that Burberry watches are over-priced Fossil creations.

Swatch also now owns many of the quality brand companies...think longine and their famous aviator watch.

Why does someone who wears a Timex know about such things.?..Long story... But it is all about marketing, and the way people's conscious minds rationalize their unconscious desires.

There are some very nice old collectable watches, but they are a bit delicate for day to day wearing.

I like a good quality watch. My current citizen doesn't need a battery and is accurate to UTC within half a second. It auto updates to the atomic clock in Denver every night. I use the calculator on it to come up with an accurate BINGO fuel/time.

Did you advise the good people at Greenwich to make the necessary corrections? :D

I actually like Citizen watches and they have made some amazing technological breakthroughs in their Eco-drive series.
A very unappreciated watch make.

If it isn't a mechanical movement and doesn't need a battery (assuming Quartz), then what powers the watch?

Citizen's Eco-Drive line of watches uses a combination of a solar conversion panel and an energy cell to power the watch - check out their FAQS at http://www.citizenwatch.com/COC/English ... =Eco-Drive.

It's a strange wonder why solar hasn't taken off for watches given their low power requirements.

But even battery powered watches need to have their cases opened far less than mechanical watches. My Timex Expedition is still on its original battery, and I bought it eight years ago.

I indicated to my wife I wanted a Bulova Precisionist for our tenth anniversary this year.... another underrated brand.

I used to love my watches but hardly wear one anymore. Cell phone, but it's no good for timing a turn by the minute. I once had a fantastic timex for work. It died and I replaced it with two duds, that put me off the brand.

I'll tell pilots this every time, Indiglo is too bright and bleaches your rods putting a stop to your night vision for twenty minutes.

I got a battery for the seiko and the watch guy told me to stay out of the water with it, it's getting too old and is at risk for O-ring failure.

Funny about watches - some people like having a good-quality watch on their wrist the same way some will only drive a Harley. I have always liked good watches, right up until the last service on my Omega watch cost more than the last service on my car and it wasn't done as well as the car service. Haven't worn it in 10 years. One day I'll dig it out from under my socks and put it on Ebay. But it really is a beautiful piece and it really shows that I have way more class than you Timex-fools.

iPhone.

For the past 14 years I've worn a Seiko. Didn't cost me a cent if you discount the 25 years I worked for same company before they handed it out. :)

My citizen eco- drive never worked right. Plus there's no backlighting, the crystal which is apparently made from the second strongest man made material in existence scratches way too easily, the strap has no give and the second hand pauses when not exposed to light, pretty annoying sometimes. I shoulda spent the extra dollars for a breitling snow birds edition.

Casio G-shock works for me.

Analog hand for UTC and it glows in the dark, digital for local time. That's all I need it to do. I have a nice GPS in the cockpit to give me ETA's, fuel burn etc etc

I am also a big fan of the timex expedition. chrono, time in two zones , and count down timer , light , date and jump off the float into the lake and no worries. break a strap somewhere and it is a whole 39 bucks to fix it (replace it)
It is not very cool looking as the fashion is currently for oversize watches that are guaranteed to scratch everything they touch, and catch on everything,;
they do look cool mind ya..

Here we go, someone posting about pilot watches and 10 others telling us how how much they love their timex indiglo. If the poster likes wearing a 'pilot' watch to match his israeli air force uniform while flying around in a cherokee, why do some feel the need to piss on his VFR flight?

I don't know who's worse!

As for watches...
