I read a book about it by Sparky Imeson. He seems to
be the expert on the subject.

Sparky went west while doing the things that he warned others not to do...at the same strip that he had previously bent an aircraft.

That's exactly why he kept telling you not to do those things! Are you going to pay attention to the truth and plan ahead now?

So is it a problem with the teacher or is the message itself wrong? I'm not convinced that mountain training is beneficial for recreational pilots.

It's not a problem with the message specifically. Humans living in an imperfect world will sometimes be lured in to a problem. Even if they are the leading expert on teaching others to avoid it.

^that was my first thought too, only flown glacier once with a buddy but if i were gonna go flirt with the mountains itd have to be with someone very experienced like francois. its at best, not overly useful and at worst, quite dangerous to do mountain training with low time instructors.

I'm not sure about the interior, but if you want to make the trek out to the Vancouver area I'd recommend Francois Leh out in Squamish or Michael Peare in Boundary Bay.

Make sure you pick an instructor with some mountain flying experience and not someone who is "practicing" his mountain flying lesson with you in the aircraft. Your life could depend on it...there have been a few accidents over the years in the lower mainland on mountain checkouts. Some of which were fatal. Don't be afraid to speak up if your instructor puts you in an unsafe situation.
