Is Wiarton a fun place to fly for dinner ?

Post by schmoo »

My PPL still has that new car smell, and I'm looking for a few places in Southern Ontario that make for a fun trip. Flying out of Brampton. Does anyone recommend Wiarton ? How about Peterborough ? What looks tempting about Wiarton is the proximity of the town to the airport.

Thanks.

I hope this has not become an Old Man type of legendary story like, "They sure don't make ice cream like that anymore!" but..

Some flying clubs, FBOs, etc. used to have a loaner car so you could go into town for some food after you bought fuel. Hopfully someone knows of such a place that still exists.

Have you looked at the copa, "places to fly." site? http://www.copanational.org/Placestofly.cfm

There's pictures.

Not sure about Wiarton but been to Peterborough a few times and the breakfast at the airport is awesome, at least for a big eater like me! The restaurant at the airport in Wiarton is unpredictable as far as being open, at least as far as I found out. The used to have bicycles at the airport that you could use to go into town, not a loaner car but at least it's wheels! Probably cheaper on insurance for them!

Wiarton and Tobermory always had a few bikes around for transients to use. Go for the White fish in either of those two places. Hanover and Collingwood used to have kitchens open for lunch. The German lady in Collingwood made some of the best "Airport" food around. Call ahead and make sure though, it has been a few years. Pack a lunch, go to Kinkardine, park the plane and walk down the hill to the beach. Always Muskoka too, 5 min walk through the bush to the truckstop.

When I first got my PPL I took my family from Brampton to Killarney for some fish and chips. They still talk about it now almost 15 years later.

For those of you that golf, has anyone tried for permission to fly into Deerhurst, Huntsville? I'm sure there is food as well as the golf or a great weekend getaway.

Killarney is amazing, totally worth the trip. I did it last year at 100 hrs and split the flight time with another PPL out of WWFC. That helped with the rental price and the walk from the strip to the fish and chips place is awesome.

I've flown to Wiarton a couple of times, they have a courtesy car, I've never taken it, but it's there. Watch out for busy days when other people have it out!

Good luck, congrats on the PPl and fly safe!

Have been to Wiarton for lunch, was busy as I was there on a Sunday. Church had just gotten out. LOL

Midland still has a courtesy vehicle I believe.

The Katana cafe in London is nice too.

Like others said the courtesy car is still available at Wiarton as far as I know. Fish and chips in Killarney is awesome. If you call the place when you land they will come pick you up from the airport. Also Lindsay has a great restaurant and is a pretty neat airport.

I was there a month and a half ago, great food! Did you hear that it did more recently than that?

This from a WWFC newsletter on June 8th
Unexpected news came today in the announcement that the FUD Grill at Edenvale Aerodrome has closed indefinitely.  As Father's Day is only a week away, we invite suggestions from our Fun Flyers for an alternate destination for our Father's Day fly out.

I've flown in there a few times, but just read at NOTAM that it is permanently closed, too bad, that was a great facility whenn it was first built, guess it just wasn’t used enough to justify the cost of maintaining.

Brampton to Tobermory is a good flight, or if you have some more time head on up to Manitoulin.

Was there on Friday, there is a new restaurant called Bistro 26 at Edenvale.

For a fun trip on Saturday August 25, fly to Kincardine CNS7 on Lake Huron, 80 NM from Brampton, for the Gathering of the Bands. There will be all-you-can eat hotdogs and local corn. Go to the beach, shop, look through the museums or listen to music.
