What are requirments for AVGAS Fuel Tank?
I'm looking at getting a 500g-1000g AVGAS Fuel Tank at a small airport for private use. Anyone know the exact requirements? I have asked fuel tank supliers and Avgas distributors and am getting many different answers.
Do I need a double line tank? Barrier? Does the inside have to be expoxy coated (if so smallest tank is 2400g)? Distance from building 40feet? Anything else?
Thanks

Re: Requirments for AVGAS Fuel Tank
The document you are looking for is the CSA B836-05. It has the standards relating to fuel storage/dispensing. It is the document Transport Canada quotes.

... and this tooYou should probably contact the municipality where the airport is located. They will set their own requirements/regulations.

Thanks! Just spoke with town and requirements not so bad as some of the vendors made out and will save us up to 50% cost for some of the extra options.Beefitarian wrote:You should probably contact the municipality where the airport is located. They will set their own requirements/regulations.

so if we meet the towns standards we need to meet this as well? I found the document but cost $139 dollars to download.

Any one have a free copy of this?

Re: What are requirments for AVGAS Fuel Tank?
I pumped AVGAS and JET Fuel 10 years at a small airport. Many issues have to be considered, in addition to the above. The most severe are environmental issues, about which the city will know very little. These are provincial regulations. In addition, you will require insurance, who will require training and certification in fuel handling and testing. Your tank will need regular inspections.
Next, you will need to deal with credit card companies, and banks. Also, some small operators will come, and ask that you keep a running bill for their expenses, until the end of the month.
You will also need to carry engine oil, light bulbs, spark plugs, and may be even maps. You will be asked to drive aircrews to town for lunch, while they wait for their passengers. You will be called at odd hours to sell 50 litres to some student doing his cross-country.
And I did not mention the need for a radio, the need for snow clearing, pump calibrating, a replacement when you are away, etc...
It is a very interesting pastime, but you will not get rich.
Please ensure that you mark up at least 35 cents a litre. Been there...

Re: What are requirements for AVGAS Fuel Tank?
Thanks Expat but I don't intend to sell fuel. This is just for a private company aircraft personal use while not at home base. Basically just need extra fuel at destination airport when rountrip fuel requirments can't be met for W&B, IFR requirements etc. Other private owners have their own fuel systems setup but we just want to make sure we are legit as people always like to target a company vs a single person when something goes south. Bascially I want something more than a sliptank in a back of a pickup truck yet not an FBO with red carpet service with $3 p/l fuel

Thanks Bushav8er. I guess what I was looking for was if there was any difference from private use only to public use but doesn't seem to say much about that and we don't have property at the airport as its all owned by town and leased out.. I guess spend the extra bucks and make sure it meets all requirments.

Shouldn't that be IMOTMDWTH?

Unless it meant, "In my opinion that many don't want HERE." Then there is no need for the 2nd "T".200hr Wonder wrote:Shouldn't that be IMOTMDWTH?
See, I can also educate.

Our company is also installing a new avgas tank, and we were told that a fuel tank is considered integral to airport operations and as such there are no special permits required.

Re: What are requirments for AVGAS Fuel Tank?
This sounds weird, but ...
If the airport is certified, then federal regs apply to the tank.
However, if the airport is NOT certified - and hence is an aerodrome -
then the federal regs do NOT apply to the tank.
Not sure why.
Various provincial agencies may tell you that they also have
jurisdiction and authority over the tank, but since aviation is
federally regulated, that's a murky claim at best.
Repeatedly, the supreme court of Canada has ruled that airports
and aerodromes are solely under the jurisdiction of the federal
government ONLY.
Provincial and municipal governments, for example have no legal
authority to require pilots and aircraft to be certified or licenced
by those provincial and municipal governments. Similarly, they
have no authority with respect to certifying or licensing airports
or aerodromes.
