Can you file VFR flight plans online and if so, how ?

Post by schmoo »

Last time I filed a flight plan, the agent said something that made me believe I could be filing my flight plans online. Is this possible ? If so, how do you do it and do you close them online as well ?

Thanks

Is that a free service? Could be quicker than sitting on hold while "you are currently first in line".

I'm always going IFR, but I think you can file VFR on fltplan.com, and it's free.

Not 100% on this, but I heard that navcanada doesn't accept flight plans from third party software. Could be wrong or simply outdated information.

The navcanada website is a free service though.

I use it all the time. You cannot close flightplans online though.

Navcanada does accept flight plans filed through third party software, including VFR plans.

I just checked into www.fltplan.com, and they only do IFR filing within Canada.

I tried the Nav Can online service. I find it quicker to call. I am always flying a different aircraft, for which all the fields have to be changed (or create a new template for each). It takes me 15 seconds to spit out a FP on the phone. Plus, I was kind of disappointed some of the features (as advertised) did not work. Like the ability to modify your departure time. I sent them an e-mail asking why, never heard back. My FIC guys are much friendlier. I'll just continue to deal with them.

When you have a master on file, your medevac and direct everywhere, filing on the phone is fast. A proven technology.

BEFAN5: It's all in the templates IMO. I don't remember there being a limit as to how many you can create, and you can sort them as well. That's in addition to extra sorting you can do with the template names if you've got a consistent pattern.

My understanding is that the updates can only be done on the VFR stuff, you have to call in for IFR flight plans. (Whether that's supposed to change or not, I do not know.)

I've been using it for a little over a month now, and it's perfect for my needs: filing four consecutive flight plans with little variation from one day to another.

You're right Louis. That was part of NavCanada's intentions AFAIK. It was also designed for private aircraft owners. Any flight plan templates saved online can actually be seen by a Flight Service Specialist. This way when you call and say "Hi, I'd like to file to Cxxx using the registration C-FABC," they can pull up the callsign and quickly see the templates and just amend the times but keep standard routes, altitudes and speeds.

It really starts screwing with the system when 5 people at one flight school have an account online and have 5 different stored templates. You call to file a flight plan and FSS has 5 different equipment codes, 5 different colours and markings etc,. all for one aircraft. This was all lectured to me one night after getting a call from London FIC on my drive home.

VFR flight plans can be changed for a short amount of time but IFR plans, once filed go directly to the ACCs and can only be changed by calling their phone number.

Anyone else have an issue with this site leaving your filed plans in the "filed" category even though you have activated, flown, and landed?

I haven't got a call yet asking if I'm dead or alive so I'm not real concerned. Just seems like a glitch.

Yes... I just assumed it was a glitch. Never been called either.

plan.navcanada.ca is really good for VFR and IFR and everything in between.

It's also very fast & intuitive if you save one template with all the particulars except for the ones that change every flight. It acts just like a master flight plan and the FIC actually see it on there system when you call in. Only save one template (headache for FIC otherwise). Once this is done you click the template tab and then the file button. All you've to do is put in the empty particulars.

Send feedback about the plans being left open... ACC software does not support this site yet. They are hoping for full operation by December. Meaning ability to cancel IFR, modify etc.

In regards to templates.... Are you saying every template users create, FIC gets it as well? Meaning if there are 10 people who fly the same plane, and 10 people who may use the site, FIC will see 10 aircraft files come up in their system?

Yup! It was mainly designed for owners who would only have one template. So flight school aircraft would have multiple templates with different information on them each time. Annoying for FSS.

Hmm interesting. I called fss after having issues with the system and they told me they don't even see plans filed through here as it goes directly to acc and they don't see it.

I'll stop using it then if that is the case.

IFR or VFR? AFAIK, IFR plans go directly to the ACC. VFR ones to FSS.
