Kelowna RCMP have released more details regarding a float plane crash on Okanagan Lake Sunday.

The student pilot was practicing takeoffs and landings near Okanagan Centre mid-afternoon when it suddenly flipped onto its back.

“It appears that a wingtip touching the water’s surface may have been a factor in the crash,” says RCMP spokesman, Kris Clark.

Witnesses had reported that one of the pontoons had dug into the water, causing it to flip.

The pilot, a 26 year-old Alberta man, managed to climb out of the plane. His injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization.

A salvage company has been hired to extract the aircraft.

Well, I'll bet he'll never do that again. Glad to hear that he made it out OK!

One thing from the article - now the PIC is responsible to have the plane removed from the lake? You'd think that the company (AirHart?) would be anxious/responsible to do so?

WOW  2 minutes under water and made it out...Lucky. Did my rating at AirHart in DZC, sad to see it wet, but glad the pilot made it out.

Company would be responsible, its the media, what do you expect?

I also did my Rating in DZC, was a real performer for a 180.
There seemed to be a bit of HotDoggin by the pilot, heavy banks, low over boats. Nothin illegal or dangerous, just seemed like some cocky flying for a student.

I’ve heard a few stories, that he dug it in on landing, glassy water caught one float first, turning the plane which grabbed the wing. And the other, that he was on take off and he cranked it for a hard turn right after he broke from the water, or rolled a float and caught the wing in the water. The take off seems likely as the prop sheared right off . I’m sure the details will come out.
Not the best start to your aviation career eh.

For the sake of clarification, I thought I would come on here to provide some facts. It was a 7-hour rating student, he had been doing very well and was sent for his solo. He was given a reference area that had been identified by the instructor as the best option but he chose to go to different location, which had glassy water conditions. As with all ratings students, he was trained for glassy water conditions however, based on what we can gather at this time it appears on his last circuit he touched water nose low and lost control. Contrary to media reports, he was not under water for two minutes. We are very happy he is safe. Extent of damage to aircraft at this time is still unknown. We are missing our 180!

I did my first seaplane solo in C-GDZC. I returned years later and worked as an instructor for Air-Hart, during that time I sent several students solo in DZC. I have fond memories of DZC and the good people at Air-Hart. I do hope all works out well for everyone involved.

Thanks for posting. Stops a lot of speculation and gossip. Again, glad to hear that your student is safe.

Not really a Cat 111a auto land approoach. Airspeed indicator, VSI, and an altimeter helps a lot, but it is not exactly rocket science. Glassy water landings are a visual maneuver assisted by utilizing the above instrumentation. I'm sure this pilot had the training. However due to his lack of experience and alleged selection of a training area other than agreed upon, the conditions exceeded his capabilities.
