How would you answer these interview questions?

Post by Edi »

I'm preparing myself for an eventual job interview and I found some tricky questions I‘d like to know your opinions on the proper answer:

- The Capt. continues an approach beyond minimum's, he tell's you that he's shot this approach a 1,000 times, know's the area, and everything's fine. What will you do?

- You find your Capt. drinking before a flight, how will you handle this?

- You are talking to the Capt., and you smell alcohol. Although you didn't see him drinking, what would you do?

- You smell smoke in the cockpit, what initial action should you take?

- Then what do you do?

- The Capt. tell's you the smoke is normal and it will clear itself, 15 minutes later the condition is growing worse. The Capt. gives you the same response.. now, what would you do?

- The aircraft is loaded way beyond gross wt., the Capt. tell's you that he does this all the time, and the aircraft will fly. What do you do?

- You have been cleared for take-off, upon getting airborne with the gear in the well's, what kind of conversation are you going to have with the Capt?

- Your the PIC on one of our Lear's, your taking off on a 13,000' runway with clear skies and unlimited visibility, upon getting airborne you have an emergency and the co-pilot call's out that there's a problem. With 11,000 feet of runway still in front of you, and the gear still down, what would you do?

- If you attain all your goals as a professional pilot what do you intend to give back to aviation?

Thanks!

strongly suggest the Captain lay off the Cubans cigars and stick with regular cigarettes, and for the last time, stop stealing the flask

I'd keep looking for a job where the company management is at least smart enough to know the difference between your and you're.

now that the snl crowd has had there say, which i will admit was very funny

here are some appropriate answers

1 / captn below approach mins > challenge and if no response after 2 nd challange YOU HAVE CONTROL. that is most sops correct answer / if capt has hearing problem possible after thousands of hours of flying and normal aging tell the cp to recommend hearing test as that is above your pay grade to do so.

2/ inform the dispatch that the flight will be delayed due to incapacitated capt. and inform hr that the capt has a disease that will need the use of their benefit package . do so discreetly.

3/ lear jets have very good climb rates most sop 's call for pre takeoff briefing if ya hit vr fly the bird to safe alt return to runway deal as in flight emergency .

hope that helps oh the hearing test usually gets a smile

Hi there, great questions! Here's what I'd look for as CP of a corporate operation

- You find your Capt. drinking before a flight, how will you handle this?
-talk to him first, recomend he sit this one out or call in sick, if not then tell him to report himself to the CP. he can't be fired since alcolism is a disease. long story, dont rat initially but whatever you do don't fly with him.

- You are talking to the Capt., and you smell alcohol. Although you didn't see him drinking, what would you do? same as above

- You smell smoke in the cockpit, what initial action should you take? depends on aircraft. say you'd do the drill. some aircraft have you find the source, others say don mask and goggles then find the source. Do what your current aircraft says. when it doubt, put your mask on

- Then what do you do? finish the drill, then do the rest of the checklist. if they get into logic with you, say turn everything non-essential off, then get on the ground. If at 30 west or something (mid atlantic) turn on system one by one with a long delay to detect what the faulty system is. stop turning stuff back on when you have enough back on to get safely on the ground.

- The Capt. tell's you the smoke is normal and it will clear itself, 15 minutes later the condition is growing worse. The Capt. gives you the same response.. now, what would you do? recomend that if that's the case, i'll look like the drama queen and buy him a beer. then say if it's not the case, even if e live, he'll face a serious legal problem of not taking action. Bill C-45 makes people in supervisory position criminally liable, that means him. it's not worth the hassel. (that's what i'd do so as not to cause an infligh argument with what sounds like a serious head-case)

- The aircraft is loaded way beyond gross wt., the Capt. tell's you that he does this all the time, and the aircraft will fly. What do you do? same as above

- You have been cleared for take-off, upon getting airborne with the gear in the well's, what kind of conversation are you going to have with the Capt? nothing but the calls below 10,000 depending on the SOP's. above that, keep it light, and pace yourself on the talking. some guys just like to sit and watch the world go by. if you talk his ear off it could be anoying, same holds true with the opposite

- Your the PIC on one of our Lear's, your taking off on a 13,000' runway with clear skies and unlimited visibility, upon getting airborne you have an emergency and the co-pilot call's out that there's a problem. With 11,000 feet of runway still in front of you, and the gear still down, what would you do? land

- If you attain all your goals as a professional pilot what do you intend to give back to aviation? fluff question

I hope that helps man

I took a CRM class in college and was told to do this but if the capt still insists on flying then YOU call in sick.

Well, as I thought BBB had pretty much nailed it, I was not going to participate, but it is Sat morning, my low coffee annuciator has stopped flashing, and it seems we have some people taking the thread quite seriously

So.....first of all , the questions, In my opinion are not valid, and the kind posed by either a touch feelie HR person or company lawyers. lawyers? Yep. We all know what the correct answer is. So asking the question is going to tell an interviewer absolutely nothing, and as history shows, in real life the FOs do not act as they answer. But. If you answer the question correctly, and then an incident occurs, you do not have a mulligan.

Otherwise, the questions are pretty much useless. Despite the honesty and accuracy of BBBs post, no one who is sniveling for a job is going to answer that way, so why ask the question?

It is to bad that the majority of people doing interviewing don't have a clue, and defer to the wisdom of a 20 something HR specialist who has been out of school three weeks,

So...how to answer the question and play their silly little game? Read the serious ones posting here
BTW...there are HR people out there who know how to structure this type of question to get a valid answer....they are invaluable in hiring, and incredibly generous in sharing donuts

These questions are straight out of Landing The Big Job if I remember correctly. Remember that most airlines and even smaller companies ask behaviour descriptive questions now. Tell us about a time when type. Hypothetical type questions are mostly gone the way of the Concorde..I mean Dodo...
