DHC-6 / C208 Float jobs in Asia

Post by Nahanni »

The job posting that came out today says, Company TBA. Anyone got the goods on who, where, what this is all about?

Definitely of interest this time of year now that both our floatplanes are out of the water.

looks like you might be right on the money. If so, anyone been to that part of the world? To relocate permanently being a ticket with the job ad, curious what it would be like for xpats.

Thanks HighSea

There was a posting about working/flying in China either on this forum or in PPRune. I think it was a flight instructor went over and wrote of his experience, I can't see it being a whole lot different now than when he went over.

I
If it is them, they are waiting for clearance from CAA to hire non residents. Kinda funny, they can't find locals to fly airlines, I don't think there will be many float pilots, let alone twin otter float pilots sitting around.

Supposed to take delivery of 2 or 3 new 400' s in New year.

Yes .............. 2 months ago. A C.V. to them cold from seeing a few things about their start-up (Meiya Air).

Got a reply to the effect that they are making inquiries w/ China CAA re: foreign pilots. Nothing since.

Won't be following up. Got a seat elsewhere.:

Dear Mr. D*******
Thank you for your application
We are interested in you CV. But we need some confirmation for employing foreign pilot from CAAC.
When we get the confirmation, we will contact you as soon as possible.

Best regards

I received a response back this morning and its a recruiter. Part of the response was:

"Your experience would be a great addition to the Meiya team and we will keep you informed of the upcoming positions."

So as I am guessing that they are probing the industry for potential pilots. Maybe trying to determine a salary?? How many guys are interested?? How many will make the move to China?? After watching what the market does airline guys, I can only assume it will take some time until they give what is deserved....but then again you still have to live in china!

Yelan WU - GM Assistant 邬叶岚-总经理助理
Meiya Air Co., Ltd. - 美亚旅游航空有限公司

The translation of the Chinese characters for anyone who is interested is

"Yelan WU - GM Assistant WU, Ye Lan - assistant to the general manager
The Meiya travel Airways Limited"

Basically it says exactly what the English version says no extra info provided.

Have a look at this site's news items. They seem to post regularly.

http://www.airmeiya.com/www/HdClsConten ... =46&page=1

From what I gather reading the different news items, they are doing seaplane training for some of their managers in the USA (Flight Safety & Wipair).

I get the feeling from these posts and what I hear about other new far-east seaplane operations, they are keen to train up their own pilots as opposed to hiring ex-pats. From the experience elsewhere, I'd say this will probably not go well if this is their intention.

The people in the news are management. Like other foreign operators, they will have to hire qualified expat captains and possibly fo's as well. As they get established, they will hire nationals as fo's. It will be years before they have any qualifed locals who can upgrade to captain. Just check the operators in the Maldives. Hopefully, they will offer a decent wage and rotation package.

The toughest part about seaplane operations in these parts of the world is educating management. All the upper level people think that training a seaplane pilot is like upgrading from a Caravan to a Pilatus. You take a 10hr flight safety course, come back and fly a couple of hours right seat or left seat captain under supervision and then you’re good to go.

It’s good to hear that they are sending their management to wipair, hopefully with slightly better educated management the pilots will have an easier time.

Yes in these parts of the world there is definitely a big push to switch over to local pilots asap because the wage difference is huge and local pilots won’t stand up to management and refuse unsafe flights. But the biggest reason is the government rightly wants their local people flying their planes and the locals won’t ever become experienced if they aren’t given / forced to get the chance.

It sounds like whoever is running this startup is doing a good job of juggling all the variables.

Another thing that these guys will learn is most of the locals will work there for a few years, get some time, then off to the airline....not many career float pilots left! I think we're a dying breed...

You can say that again dare devil. Not only are we a dying breed, but some of us are getting old.

I wonder why some of these start ups don't hire a company like KBA to set things up for the first 3 or 4 years. No sense trying to reinvent the wheel.
