Ice Pilots Started

Post by wan2fly99 »

anybody say yesterday's show?

I thought they would open up with a memorial to Arnie? They showed some remembrance for the B737 crew that went down and for some other pilots who lost there life up. Sad to hear all of that

Bright side might be a new girl on board from Toronto Actually cute. She got a chance to land the DC-4

Was also dis-appointed in Joe getting upset over an overshoot.

Sad so see that they only showed at the end for 5 secs the picture of there mechanic that passed away also.

Joe sure sets a terrible example to young pilots, if you're uncomfortable with the approach for any reason then go around! His teachings and attitude will get more people killed.

Not in the league of lot you guys here on the board, but I thought if not sure or you feel not comfortable for the landing overshoot.

I agree they should have started the season with a show for Arnie. He seemed like a classy guy and great teacher. He worked for them for many years. Maybe they have a show dedicated for him Will see.

Also seems like that place is a sweat shop. The lure to fly a plane, people will do anything.

That whole overshoot deal did not make any sense to me either and it seems like some editing happened between the two different events. I can sort of understand that there is a possibility of the overshoot mishap when the flaps are fully deployed and you are about to touch down VS a lot earlier in the approach. Later show narrator mentions how Joe is going to overshoot later on as well, yeah but for the big $$$ and it was fun.

I think, I read somewhere they will focus on Arnie in one of the later episodes. The two crashes in the beginning of the first episode were very sad to begin with. I wish they had more accurate/smart/usefull flying tips from the experienced crew.

It's a TV show, so I take it as an entertainment and not think too much about it.

I couldn't help but laugh when Joe said he doesn't like his airplanes being used to make a fictitious tv show. Besides, revenue is revenue; what does it matter whether they're being used as props or for "legitimate" work hauling pop and chips?

glad to hear that they will do a show on Arne.

Those crashes were sad. I had some people who perished in a crash a few years ago. It really gets to you when yu can put a face to a crash. This crash was a Baron 58 from Oshawa going to US Lost an engine at altitude Instead of trying for Buffalo they tried for another airport with non precision approach ( forgot which one). Going into the airport , they broke out high and tried to overshoot with 3 big people on board. They spun in

Yeap its a show so I leave it at that, but they do seem to work hard up there and in that environment

I like to watch it and enjoy a bit

Keep

Anyone else catch the comment about not wanting to go around when "landing in 200 and an 8th "? I didn't realize the DC3 was CAT 3 certified. Could have been a slip of the tongue but I doubt it.

Well, if they were inside the FAF when the vis dropped, then there wouldn't have been an approach ban, and the ceiling is still good enough for CAT 1. That said, if Joe can't differentiate between a cautionary go-around in CAVOK conditions and one in low-IFR conditions, and he doesn't trust the judgement of his captains in those situations, perhaps he shouldn't be running an airline.

Probably too early to acknowledge it, but I'll be curious if, at some point, they will mention the loss of engineer Jim Essery who passed away this week.

I suppose that if you can't even read the date the article was written we can't assume you'd bother to read even the FIRST post in this thread?

Great episode to scare people away from the industry. Dangle the DC4 in front of people so they will work ramp for years. A company that seem to have zero training. A boss that seem to have zero personnel management skills. I'm glad one of the rampie quit and went to dispatch. This show highlight how operators in this industries still think and operate with a 1920's mentality. No wonder people suggest wannabes to get an engineering degree and just fly for fun.

And .... they did it so smoothly they had a "Have Landed" sign installed in the cabin for the benefit of their passengers.

When they showed the clip of Joe doing his approaches I saw the Cargojet plane in the background, and that tipped me off that I have some pics of him that day. Looks like unfortunately I missed his last "really bad" approach though. Damn.

Drove by their yard a couple times this morning and saw a bunch of filming going on. Wonder if it's last minute stuff for this season or starting already on 5?

Man...when will the "Old School" operators figure it out? Rather than spread airplane parts and passengers (or freight) all over the airport attempting a landing in poor vis or after an unstable approach, a Go Around is ALWAYS the best option! It's used almost all over the world nowadays and the proof is out there. The crashes caused by not going around after an unstable approach or loss of visual ref have almost stopped. Yes, there are still a couple of areas in the world where its a "fail" if you dont land, and people are still being killed by these guys (most of us know where) but these operators are now being ostracized and banned from operating into the western hemisphere or have western trained expat captains on board or they aren't allowed to have a foreign OPs Spec. For Joe to berate an employee in public (and on film!) only serves to prove that he is a dinosaur and needs to have his Operations Certificate reviewed...what a GREAT example to the young pilots who seem to revere the type of operation he runs. It's shameful and if you are a new pilot on this site, think very carefully about this type of Operator, he'll kill you for a small profit and doesn't give a sh*t about you or your family. Seriously...and yes its TV, but if he's willing to do it for entertainment, what happens when the cameras are off?

Yea, I guess I am a little behind, I completely misread that date. Attention to detail would be a good thing. Apologies.
