What's the saying, you get the union you deserve, and likely an employee group you deserve also.
Edited to add, I don't think they are bad employees, don't actually know, but one things for sure, if you're a greedy bastard, you'll end up with angry, spiteful employees.
Scrooged by Sunwing, flight attendants designate employer cheapskate of the year
Friday December 21st 2012 - CUPE Press Release

Today, tired of being scrooged, the union representing flight attendants at Sunwing awarded their employer an informal and symbolic prize for cheapskate of the year. Unionized since March, 2012, flight attendants have been negotiating their first collective agreement since early September. According to the union, so far, talks have been completely unsuccessful.

"What they have actually put on the table is insulting. This from Sunwing, the airline company that pays flight attendants less than any other carrier and who, at the same time, is Canada's most profitable airline. We have not given up hope, but it feels like we're up against the Scrooge of the Canadian airline industry," says Caroline Bédard, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) national representative and person responsible for the Sunwing negotiations.

"Wednesday, the company filed for conciliation with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Talks will resume in January with the help of a mediator. We are hoping to have a fresh start because so far, we were going nowhere," explained Mark Brancelj, president of the Sunwing flight attendants union, CUPE Local 4055. "The goal of these negotiations is to raise the flight attendants' working conditions to the level of standards set by the airline industry."

Last March, approximately 900 flight attendants chose to join CUPE in a vote conducted by the Canada Industrial Relations Board. Since the vote, the union local has been busy building, training and organizing. The negotiating committee on the union's side is made up of members from each of the airline's six bases: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec.

Sunwing is a highly profitable company in an industry where competitors are struggling. Management totes up that they are the only airline with a profit margin oscillating around the six per cent mark, while their competitors are showing margins around one per cent and 1.5 per cent, at best. The airline carrier continues to grow. Its 2012 profits are expected to reach about $70 million.

CUPE is Canada's largest airline union. With workers from Sunwing, CUPE now represents nearly 10,000 flight attendants at both large and smaller air carriers including Air Canada, Air Transat, CanJet, First Air, Cathay Pacific, CALM Air, Canadian North, and the ground agents at Porter Airlines, in Ottawa.

You guys are desperately taking this to the next level.
I have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles on many airlines, and the Sunwing Flight Attendants are among the most dedicated hard working Flight Attendants that I have had the pleasure of working with, or that I have observed as a passenger.
Disgusting

Cabin Crew at Sunwing are amongst the hardest working in the industry and as friendly a bunch as I have had the pleasure of flying with. They deserve to be rewarded with reasonable working conditions for their tireless dedication and hard work.

Morningwood, with all due respect, I did not say they are currently bad employees, I don't actually know so I'll have to take your word for it. I also did not write the article, however you seem to suggest they are immune to the effects of greed on behalf of the most profitable airline in the WORLD. Why don't you ask AC flight attendants why they are so angry, I'm pretty sure they'll tell you something about greedy corporate robber barons.
From the words of their union, "What they have actually put on the table is insulting" Last time I checked, when people are insulted, they retaliate.
Good luck with your negotiations, and I truly mean that.

Sunwing Canada's most profitable airline?

I thought Porter was the most profitable airline in Canada, though it was nip and tuck between them and jetsGo for a while before jetsgo BK'd as a result of their profitability.

Greyhound made a ton of dough too, as did Astoria and Vistajet.

And then there was Nationair and Intair. They printed money.

Smart investors knows that privately held airlines that never report audited financial results are always the most profitable airlines in Canada.......until they go poof at 3am because of all their success.

Posted this on another thread.

Reference page 8&9 and view their portion of the profits for 2012.

TUI which is a publicly traded company have made a handsome profit from their investment in Sunwing a privately traded company.

Noteworthy is the 17% increase in return in 2012 from 2011.

My guess is that they are very happy with their investment.

This report has no credibility. You think that 4 written lines with no details on revenu, expenses, taxes, provision, amortization, etc will prove something... come on!

According to M. Deluce, Porter made money every year but once the book were open nobody wanted to buy a share. They gave up after lowering the IPO price twice. To me, those 4 lines are in the same folder.

If they make so much money they should not be afraid to give their employes a decent pay and work condition that can come close to industry standart.

Ok then...
Believe what you like.

The report has no credibility? It better. It is a publicly traded company. Sunwing on the other hand is not and does not report publicly. TUI is the only window available for the general public to be able to peer into the profitability of Sunwing.
TUI most very likely did their due diligence before putting in a $100 Million Investment into Sunwing a few years ago.
Same folder as Porter? I doubt you are suggesting TUI wishes to invest in Porter....

I get that Sunwing is about as popular as a pork sausage in a synagog these days... But no need to make things up... Just sharing the facts.

Believe what you want, but I went over the financials of TUI for a 6 year period last Spring, and my conclusion is that while TUI may have pulled off a profit, overall their situation is horrible, they are a dieing company, and I wouldn't want to have any of my money tied up with them.

Peter Long, Chief Executive of TUI Travel PLC, commented:
“The year has been one of many successes. We have delivered record Group profits while the UK achieved outstanding results both in terms of profit and margin all against a backdrop of continued economic uncertainty. Our proven strategy continues to evolve and drive strong trading momentum throughout the Group. Overall, with the exception of France, trading for both Winter 2012/13 and Summer 2013 is very encouraging.
“We are today pleased to announce the next stage of our strategic development. This roadmap for growth, built on our detailed understanding of the market and robust business models, means that we are well placed to continue to deliver long-term sustainable growth, which in turn, will drive further value for both our shareholders and our customers.”

PJ, looked at in isolation I'd have to agree with you, but you could insert Thomas Cook or Transat Tours into that statement and it would be equally valid. From an investment point of view none of them makes sense, but they're not all going to die. Most likely they'll all keep muddling along.

Merry Christmas.

That would be my wish for all concerned. Profitable companies hopefully means stable employment for all.
Hopefully we all have some positive things to look forward to in 2013.

Ea306 please stop believing everything that you read from upper management...those guys are crooks in a suit. Check page 156 of TUI group year result it shows a comprehensive loss of 343.7m of Euro.. Not necessarily bad depending of the situation but not a success for sure...

No worries mate.

The TUI report has not been supplied to any of us by Upper Management at Sunwing. My guess is that they would rather we did not have access to this information given that they are in contract talks with CAW7378 and also CUPE.

Love the picture mind you!

Of course the CEO would provide an upbeat soundbite on the group's profit. They want investors, easy financing, stocks to swing upwards in price, a number of things. His Job depends on it!

Nope, buy tickets from a company who pays their employees fairly ( flight attendants, pilots and other workers ) and who employs Canadians, who pay taxes here and contribute to our economy.

Best cabin crews I've experienced on ANY flight in recent years with Canadian airlines.

Are you suggesting the "Canadians" that are employed by Sunwing don't pay taxes? I'll bet half their Captains paid more in taxes then you made all year. Disrespect for the Canadians employed by Sunwing will get you nowhere.

Am afraid you mis-understood what he meant to write.

"...Buy tickets from a company .....who employs Canadians who pay taxes here and contribute to our economy" is reference to a certain companies who employ foreigners who do not pay taxes in this country and who contribute zero to our economy.
