AME Job Market in Vancouver BC

Post by tedmont11 »

What's the chance of finding a job/apprenticeship in Vancouver BC after graduating from a AME category M program? It seems like there is a very low chance of getting one after graduation and that the only place looking is MTU.

If you are attending BCIT then you probably realize they graduate 16 - 32 M apprentices every 8 weeks.

That's a lot of apprentices looking for work in and around Vancouver...so of course the competition for jobs is fierce.

...it's a lot more than just marks that gets you a job.

You'll have a hard time finding a job in Vancouver and an even harder time keeping one if you have zero experience around aircraft and tools besides what you've learned in school. Unfortunately BCIT is developing an unfortunate reputation for releasing poor apprentices which isn't doing the good ones any favours (ref what NeverBlue said theres a lot of candidates out there). About the only way you'll work your way into a job in Vancouver is starting off as a groomer or rampy for a company that handles these services themselves, it will put you on their radar. This will also put you in a position where should you succeed at earning an apprenticeship you'll at least be comfortable around the companies equipment.

However You're still probably better off looking out of town. Apprenticeships in Vancouver generally pay pretty poorly so if the only thing keeping you here is that its Vancouver Id recommend heading elsewhere if an opportunity presents itself.
