Was that a 707 or something? There were so many switches, and knobs......it looked so dated. Those EFIS panels looked out of place with all those " steam guages" around them.

The overhead panel was kept the same on all models of the 737( only a few small differences). The intention was to keep it simple for pilots transitioning to the NG from the older models. That's why the overhead panel looks "dated"

You can thank Southwest Airlines for the steam driven looking overhead panel. As the largest operator of the 737 they have played an integral role in the cockpit architecture of the newer 737's. Wanting a smooth transition from older to new generation machines for its pilots was the driving force.
