Skydive caravan
Heard that skydive Toronto crashed the caravan short of the runway today. Gear folded up, wing crumpled, engine off on an angle. Pilot walked away.

Re: Skydive caravan
I wonder how much money the pilot will save by being out of a job?

The Star did have a report of a crash in Innisfil but nobody walked away uninjured. Pilot was transported to RVH in Barrie.

CTV reports; South Simcoe police say the pilot was the lone occupant of the plane that crashed Saturday afternoon in the area of Side Road 10 and Concession 3.
The 53-year-old man from Desoronto, Ont., was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious, but not life-threatening.

Re: Skydive caravan
Good thing he didn't have to worry about putting his gear down..
Re: Skydive caravan
Kind of makes one want to take up sky diving. Maybe not.
These are not easy airplanes to crash.....wonder what happened?
Dead stick, came up short and couldn't get the beast to spool up? Classic new turbine pilot "trap". I've had to smack more than one new chap across the back of the head with a steel log book for getting "behind the power curve".....

Re: Skydive caravan
Well Doc, at least when skydiving you don't have to land in the aircraft....

Re: Skydive caravan
As our Van went onto floats a couple weeks ago, I saw for the first time the main gear out of their housing... it would take on hell of an impact to get those to fold...
Re: Skydive caravan
I had a tour at Cessna of them being installed.......they're TOUGH!esp803 wrote:As our Van went onto floats a couple weeks ago, I saw for the first time the main gear out of their housing... it would take on hell of an impact to get those to fold...

Not tough enough for operations like Skydive Toronto.

Re: Skydive caravan
So Doc. Are we to believe that based on your knowledge of this accident that it involved a low time turbine pilot who had no knowledge of the "power curve" Or are you talking out of your ass again?

another news article.
The pilot had scratches on his face, a couple stitches were needed. not serious at all.

Re: Skydive caravan
At the risk of becoming an armchair investigator
From the article:
"When he's coming for his approach (to the airport), he needed a little more power because he had to go over the trees and then land, and he didn't have the power. So instead of crashing the trees, he crashed in the field"
Possible FCU failure at the worst possible moment?
(taken with a few grains of salt being spectator reports and all)
Flame away!

Re: Skydive caravan
If the guy didn't come outta there with a bad back, he's got a friggin stainless steel sacroiliac.

Re: Skydive caravan
I'm sorry. Did I strike a nerve? Don't think I made ANY reference to THIS pilot's experience level. It's one scenario. Don't you find it stuffy with you head that far up.....phillyfan wrote:So Doc. Re: Skydive caravan
flaming flamers...thats all avcanada is now. Who knows what happened, if i were that caravan pilot i would hunt you all down individually and make you cry in front of your friends. I would imagine the guy feels bad enough without a bunch of flight instructors slagging him..i wish you all gear failures soon so i can read some good slags. More likely gear failures in your flight sim between warcraft sessions. Dbags...

Re: Skydive caravan
You work for free, too?if i were that caravan pilot
Don't worry about it - this is a "personal growththe guy feels bad enough
experience" for him, which we all can learn from.
Re: Skydive caravan
Easy big fella, last time I checked this was a forum for discussion and not hoping for the demise of your colleagues. And nope no flight instructor here just someone currently flying a 208 so yes this particular accident has got me wondering.gongshowking wrote:flaming flamers...thats all avcanada is now. Re: Skydive caravan
Glad to hear the pilot is ok. I have nothing good to say about Skydive Toronto though. Are paying the Caravan pilots zilch like the 182 guys back when I wanted a "job" there?
Re: Skydive caravan
Glad to hear he will be ok....
but.........
He sure planted it good (and don't tell me you weren't thinking it). Now that is a good tractor prop...........
I wish I had more but CAT got my tongue......
I wonder if the farmer found it funny..........

Re: Skydive caravan
The worst thing about aviation is pilots. Man there are a lot of ,losers and pricks in this industry. The sad thing is that the younger generation looks up to these losers. Newbies. If some internet chatroom sky god gives you advice. Keep in mind that in most cases it comes from his ass. Be wary of the guy who thinks he has all the answers. He is the most dangerous of them all.
Re: Skydive caravan
A quasi relevant bit of advice in itself. A sky god in one realm of aviation is certainly a newbie in another - none of us know it all. How nice it would be if the contributors to these chats would state their personal flying experience on type, and their actual knowledge of the event (if any). It would help readers sort the wheat from the chaff for themselves.....Newbies. If some internet chatroom sky god gives you advice.
Courteous speculation may be tolerable, if it is apparent that that is what it actually is.
Personally, I have no direct knowledge of the event. I have knowledge, and resulting faith, in the good will of the operation, and enough time flying Caravans to know how they fly power on, and power off.
From all of that, I have zero opinion about this unfortunate event, empathy for the people involved, and an interest in learning something useful from the lesson to be learned, whatever it may be. Thankfully, I'm unlikely to be mistaken for a sky god on Caravans any time soon!
