I thought this photo was interesting and I assume its a 5th Engine Ferry. Has any Forum members ever done one?

Re: DC8 fifth engine ferry
The worst I done was a one LESS...three engines ferry out of Bogota(8600feet). I had a boring life...
Speaking of the good old Diesel Eight...Anyone else rode ON TOP of it?

The rocket powered motorcycle that was built for the Montreal jump...the story of the bike builder is here..

Wheeeee! Over 27 busses!!!

I wonder if he had to super glue his eyebrows to the mask to keep the holes aligned?

Not uncommon to see this. L-1011 did it too:

F*&k yeah I did it. lolxchox wrote:Not uncommon to see this. L-1011 did it too:
All joking aside, Many aircraft ferry engines right on the wing due to a lack of service centers or ability to get an engine to the AOG aircraft.
Some other shots:

In another vein, remember two engine ferries on the 727. We put a lock that fit on the CSD flange to lock N2 and some big zap straps to lock N1 since it was FOD'd out after a main tire blew.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

So, are many transport-category jets built with mounting points on one or both wings just for this purpose? I had no idea.
Re: DC8 fifth engine ferry
I am surprised this is allowed with passengers, based on the restrictions I've seen on various STCs for major external modifications.

I'm sure it's just like strapping a canoe to the floats isn't it?
Re: DC8 fifth engine ferry
Yes and no. They are built with this capibility, usually the left wing has the mount and nowadays - it's just the bigger ones. So, are many transport-category jets built with mounting points on one or both wings just for this purpose? I had no idea.
I'm suprised you would think this - why would it not? It's perfectly safe, and would be a very expensive way to ship an engine if you couldn't carry passengers. Otherwise you'd just throw it in a freighter.I am surprised this is allowed with passengers, based on the restrictions I've seen on various STCs for major external modifications.
Not quite! LOL. it has slightly less drag.I'm sure it's just like strapping a canoe to the floats isn't it?

What sort of preperation do they take with the engine windmilling in the air for hours at a time? I see some photos show a cover over the intake, while others don't.

I was wondering the exact same!
Re: DC8 fifth engine ferry
Some have a cover (Turbojets), some (Turbofans) - like the Qantus in flight pic, they remove the fan blades and install a small fairing cover over the compressor intake to the core.
