Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
Hey everyone just saw this video posted on youtube depicting an epic fail by the anchor. I mean this is straight from the book of Ron Burgandy. I mean, did she actually know what she was saying?

Yes the names might be a bit innapropriate and gave us a chuckle. The real humor is the fact that the news lady read them all out with a straight face.

Apparently this is the work of an intern at NTSB. Funny? Yes. Racist? Just a tad. Appropriate? No. Good luck for the intern to find a government job after this.

It's pretty unclear but, seems they phoned him to get confirmation of the names. The intern then "acted outside their authority."
I have to think that means they answered the phone, thought, "This must be a prank call. I'll say yes to get rid of them." Interesting how much blame they seem to be getting for that. Tori and the station are defecting way too much in my opinion. I suppose you would have to in order to keep pretending to share the news.

On a related, in appropriately funny note... I was at the Arlington, WA fly-in yesterday and saw a booth selling Boeing merchandise. On one table was a stack of airliner models in boxes, including the 777. I quietly asked my traveling companion "I wonder if this model comes with a detachable tail section?"
I think I saw a dirty look from the guy behind the counter...

I found it odd that the tail detached exactly at the aft pressure bulkhead. Bad lap joint repair from a tail strike years before?
Ho Lee Fuk. We should be seriously questioning our media sources if stuff like this makes it to television.
Reminds me of the old poster on avcan named Wan Wing Low

Apparently Asiana Airlines is considering suing the tv station, more details are on cnn's website. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sue.
Re: Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
They have sued.

Apparently the newscast is "damaging to their reputation".

The tragedy of this is the naive and/or astoundingly stupid editors and the anchor for taking these absurd names to air.
The accurate dissemination of news by broadcast journalists has just taken a big hit.

Just goes to show how the media will go on to post news without verifying the credibility/validity of their source. A reminder for us too when we watch sensationalist mainstream news-media.

No, crashing a 777 in perfect weather on a visual approach is damaging to your reputation!CFR wrote:They have sued.

Considering there was death during this tragic and unfortunate event, I hope the airline wins in court when they move forward with a lawsuit.
Re: Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
I think best of all it shows how sick is the society is, with all the seriousness discussing this as a "racist and inappropriate".
I have not had a laugh like this for a long time. And still can't grasp how unprofessional the news crew was. Hats off to the NTSB intern, he needs to find a better job anyway.

Re: Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
Was the "intern" taken as well, as an inside joke in the NTSB office ?
The "news crew" would have seen the incoming call is from The National Transportation Safety Board on their call display, and quickly given it an official status to pass along to the anchor desk: "this just in" ... more-than-likely if that was just before the 6pm evening newscast and didn't leave the time for the unsuspecting news-editor's eye to scrutinize it properly. The news team doesn't understand pilot jargon and didn't catch the coded phrasology of the faked asian-sounding name-phrases given, and no need to question that authority on the other end of the line knowing the call has originated from the well respected organization itself.

After the accident is expertly investigated the airline company will be more than satisfied with the outcome and will forget that the unfortunate prank ever took place ..... you would hope.JungianJugular wrote:Considering there was death during this tragic and unfortunate event, I hope the airline wins in court when they move forward with a lawsuit.

I can't believe anyone with two grams of grey matter to rub together would actually read that on air. Gives a whole new meaning to airhead.

There, fixed it for you. Seems to be a problem for newscasters and pilots alike.Siddley Hawker wrote:I can't believe anyone with two grams of grey matter to rub together would actually read that on air. Gives a whole new meaning to FIXATED.
Re: Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
"Newscasters and pilots alike" can get drowsy. A teleprompter pumps out the words steady and no time to think. She was definitely blind-sided, and in haste to air the four simple names got past the editors as well.
Translated, many names in a similar way have often taken on a new meaning in English. In being polite, you don't question them.

Re: Epic Fail on News cast of Asiana 214
I think the final straw for Asiana leading up to the initiation of the lawsuit was when they called and insisted that the TV station name the person who approved this news release and the station replied with "Sum Dum Phuc". The last name may sound similar but there is no relation to Mr. Ho Lee
