Reading between the lines, Amphibious/upside down. First thing that pops into my mind is yet another preventable accident.

I'm guessing they mean he was going to survey on land once he got to the lake.

I agree it's sad to read about the outcome.

they were doing aerial survey work.. I believe the pilot was setting out ground GPS base stations for another aircraft that carries out the survey.
