Any polite class1 CFI at Spring Bank area?

Post by Someguy123 »

I am currently with Fly right and i hate it there, because of the bad attitute of a CFI there. I am looking for Class 1 or 2 good CFI who can help me complete my PPL in peace. I have two choices Calgary flying Club or Spring Bank Collage but this is what find out so far about both flying clubs.

Calgary Flying Club
Cons: Busy Schedule, $130 Membership fee, ladies at the front don't know any thing.
Pros: SOLO Flights are a bit cheaper on Cessna 152, and can save some money. Plenty of Aircraft.

Spring Bank Collage
Cons: Less experienced Instructors, 10 hr flight simulator is mandatory.
Pros: Very Friendly people, i was standing there for 10 minutes and every one wanted to socialized.

What you think are the ups and down with these schools? or Should i continue with insult and humiliation.

Why have you determined you need a class 1 or 2 to do your PPL? Did you have your problem with a flight instructor at fly right, or did you have a problem with the Chief Flight Instructor? I it is the former, you should complain to the CFI, if its the latter you should switch schools.

edit: If you had a problem with D at Fly Right, then you will want to seek out either E at CFC, or G at SATC.

Maybe try Skywings Okotoks (depending on where you live) - I think you might find what you're looking for there.

What, you don't have politeness as one of your ground school subjects for class fours? I spend at least five hours on it right after learning factors.

Leave! Go somewhere else, go anywhere else; it doesn't really matter. If you're already miserable, the chances of you continuing on in flying are not good; bluntly, I'd be surprised if you finish your private if you stay there. After all; if it's not fun, what's the point of doing it?

Leave of course if you feel there's no chance left of getting the PPL because of something real bad, otherwise it's probably better to stay and endure the differenct character(s) than yourself. I don't remember a whole lot of politeness in my pilot training except maybe when showing up at the counter to put more money in the account. I found it was a very strict environment to be in (and only later began to understand why) ... remember it was a lot tougher than living/working the long hours on the farm back in those days.

Oh, wow.

Guys, flying is supposed to be fun. Like screwing, and
motorcycle riding, you do it because you enjoy it. If it's
unpleasant or hurts, you're probably doing it wrong

If you hate the FTU you are at, get your logbook and PTR
certified and get the hell out of there. Find another FTU
that suits you better. You will be angry at yourself that
you didn't switch earlier, because you didn't know any better.

Don't forget - you are the customer. You are paying a lot
of money for their services - they had better deliver quality.

Well that's just it . When the going gets tough (some of the points that are a little more difficult during instruction) you wouldn't want to check out prematurely only to find " that's " the way it works elsewhere as well.

Stay away from that place. Top notch training... lousy method of delivery. I applied for a job there once and was pretty much convinced right from the get go I did not ever want to work there. :smt014

No, that's not the way it works elsewhere. Most instructors are calm and polite. I don't like being yelled at either.

+1
Just finished my PPL flight training recently and my instructors were invariably calm and polite.

The man knows what he's talking about.
I agree with CpnCrunch, if Okotoks is at all an option that's where I would go.
And I have never trained with them, I just watch how they operate since my plane is there

Was never was "yelled at" by any of my instructors (don't know yet if that's the case here ... just that it's a "bad attitude" opinion), but on occasion must say have seen a peeved instructor coming into the lounge really stressed (super pissed off) about some lesson goofed up in some way by a student. Is everyone to deal with that anger in the same way ?

In my opinion, you won't last long as an instructor if you get easily stressed.

One must also remember though that you're paying them to teach you how to fly, not to be your BFF. Ask yourself what you want out of your flight training. I'll make no comment on the school in question, but I don't see a complaint above that someone hasn't learned anything about flying, only that they didn't appreciate the style of delivery.

Although flight instruction can crush your ego,
as a customer you should always be treated
with respect.

Its my experience that "treated with respect" is confused with "I don't like having my ego bruised".

I'm at Springbank Air Training College, and I like it a lot. Very professional, I feel quite "safe" even if I get a little frustrated at the very regimented lesson plans etc. As someone earlier hinted, there's probably some very good reasons that they are teaching me things in the order they are, and I'll only appreciate those reasons once I'm more experienced.

I took familiarization flights at both CFC and SATC before picking SATC. If you do one at SATC, you'll get an hour of dual hobbes time time for your logbook at a reduced rate, something like $168 instead of $210. Only works for the first hour, but everything counts!

If you are changing schools, remember your Pilot Training Record is *yours* and the school *must* sign it off and allow you to take it. Call Transport Canada if they mess you around.

pdw, you're talking essentially about how the rest of the world works. Let's put it this way; I wasn't there, I don't know if he was yelled at either. But as I know EXACTLY who he's talking about, I've accepted without question that he was indeed yelled at and generally belittled. He's not the first person to complain, he certainly won't be the last. I know of a couple of guys who started from nothing and made a lot of money in the dog eat dog world of the oil patch who went there; both left due to treatment from that individual. What does that tell you?

You're outlining a character issue that is not necessarily a safety issue, ... nor likely a revenue issue for that type of organization (though up-for-debate whether it could be in the future).

This would not be the only time/place this type of problem/description has surfaced at an airport. I know that most (who are in management in those situations) are likely afraid to rock-the-boat anymore where the 'bottom line' seems to be intact. Lack of discipline in safety & prevention may have been a bigger issue of Flying-Clubs/FTUs at one time ... but not so much any more (stricter rules ... SMS ) and in the processs it seems, much as politeness is still favoured, it doesn't seem that being courteous at all times is too important for survival (nor that it would hurt the organization to lose a portion of the clients over time ... which seems to happen everywhere anyway).

With lots of new aviation enthusiasts showing up every day at the FTU door ... whether they finish or not doesn't seem to hurt these business monopolies (when they are the only one in that area). It really bugs me in a way ... to see businesses that could afford to treat their customers like crap for any reason. In the long run you'd think it would do damage ... regardless of the level of safety achieved ?

What's the safety record like at your airport ?

As you get older, you realize that there are an awful
lot of ways to do anything. Many of them will work
reasonably well.

It is a given that most people will have their ego crushed
at some point during their flight training, because they are
not that one-in-a-billion mythical "natural" pilot that doesn't
need to learn anything. Amazingly, many people feel that
they are entitled to be that rare, mythical unicorn in the wild,
which is a statistical impossibility.

Anyways, there are many different ways to crush someone's
ego. You can do it loudly and cruelly, or you can do it quietly
and kindly.

Sort of like executing a prisoner. You can either do it with
gentle respect, or crude contempt. See the difference?
