You are hurting my eyes
Yes you... the guys that post in text speak. I know I am an old fart and not with it but it I find it very, very, very, annoying to read a post with the texting contractions.
Electrons are free, everybody has a full keyboard on their computer/laptop/tablet/ phone so how about using all the letters for every word. Is that too much to ask ?

Re: You are hurting my eyes
Big Pistons Forever, I quite agree with you. I suppose there are a very few places where abbreviations or acronyms are necessary (not here), but otherwise, it is an indication of your respect for others, that you use English as a tool, and use your tools properly. This goes on to using grammar and punctuation correctly too. If in doubt, read "Eats shoots and leaves".
As an employer, I doubt I would hire a person whom I saw communicating in abbreviations. If they won't communicate with care, what else won't they do with care?

Proper punctuation saves lives. "Let's eat Grandma!" vs "Let's eat, Grandma!"

If it makes you feel any better BPF, when I first started Modding here I'd actually edit people's posts for spelling, grammar, and punctuation... was like pushing an infinite rope, so it wasn't long until that ended!

I'm really sorry if this is offensive to some people, but I urge you all to watch the whole movie. At first it seems like it might be a comedy, but if you watch it carefully you'll see it's part prophecy and part documentary and isn't funny at all.:

BFP, I agree with you, but.. you are just as guilty as the people you complaining about. Lets all please use the spelling of the english language defined by Chaucer, and grammar as defined by Shakespeare. Then we can all write "proper" English.

It is a common mistake

I find it annoying yet mildly amusing when people use Internet memes wrong.
The worst one around here is when someone decides to put in there vote but instead of doing it right they think they're being clever by using a bigger number.

Re: You are hurting my eyes
Lousy Fisherman, I see where you are going with this argument, but the difference here is that the language itself has evolved smoothly and gradually from Chaucer's or Shakespeare's eras to the present day and reflects different grammar as spoken (other than the fact that you're talking about prose in both cases, not common speech) and/or different popular spellings. However, regardless of spelling, the written words were communicated using a alphabet. What "text speak" is doing is effectively converting our alphabetic written language into a semi-logography, where single glyphs are used to represent whole words or syllables or even entire sentence fragments. It's not merely a trend that represents current fashion in spelling or pronouncement, (which has always been propagated through mis-spelling) it's a degradation of the written language to a more primitive form, basically indecipherable to anyone other than those "in the know" who currently speak the language in the colloquial fashion. It's literally a degradation of the language, whereas simple deliberate mis-spelling or grammatical quirks such as those that have changed since Chaucer's day only represent differences in the way we speak, not a loss of ability to communicate ideas.LousyFisherman wrote:BFP, I agree with you, but.. you are just as guilty as the people you complaining about. text speak
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_procedureEven if you haven't heard it in real life, I'm guessing you've heard a pilot on TV say "Roger." I bet you've even heard pilots say "Roger Wilco." Have you ever wondered who Roger Wilco is? And why pilots like to say his name?
According to The Straight Dope, in 1927 "Roger" was the word chosen to represent the letter "R," which is, of course, the first letter in the word "received." In other words, a pilot would receive instructions, and to indicate he had received them, he'd say "Roger." Why didn't he just say "received"? Well, during WWII, not everyone spoke English, but "R" -- or "Roger" -- became the internationally accepted way of acknowledging receipt of instructions. (Of course, in 1957 the word "Roger" was replaced with the word "Romeo" but by that time, "Roger" and "received" were synonymous.)
So what about "Wilco"? Its story is even simpler: it's an abbreviation of "will comply." So when pilots say "Roger Wilco," what they mean is "I received your instructions, and I will follow them."
Roger?

Change "converting" to "smoothly evolving" and I could not say it better myself. What "text speak" is doing is effectively converting our alphabetic written language into a semi-logography, where single glyphs are used to represent whole words or syllables or even entire sentence fragments.

I cannot stand myself text speak or lol speak. It just sound lazy and uneducated most of the time.
Except like here where it is funny and steer the pot.
Those little smiley faces add to a post comprehension though....

Just that it didn't in your case.
I guess language will evolve and at some point some of this text speak will be part of it.
like "it is" can be "it's" or "does not" "doesn't"
TG stand for my lack of "Nom de plume" imagination, that's all.
Re: You are hurting my eyes
You get use to it! I find it useful, especially when texting when you have a limited amount of characters you can type and I find it easier to text than make a call now most times, just more convenient for a quick communication with someone, especially the wife. After a while you don't even see the text speak. And now, thanks to my daughter, I'm even pretty fluent in "1337" speak now, which is downright scary!!!

Re: You are hurting my eyes
I'm pretty sure I don't want to know what "1337" is.
We'll basically be splitting off into two different forms of written language, one for more-or-less banal jibber-jabber and another, the original alphabet, maybe retained for use only by intellectuals. Again, I suggest you watch "idiocracy" for a taste of what that will be like!
Yes, Lousy fisherman, you are probably right! The only thing is that over the long run, a "logography" is LESS desirable than a proper alphabet for communicating original thought!LousyFisherman wrote: Change "converting" to "smoothly evolving" and I could not say it better myself.
