Superior Airways

Post by Skeptic »

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about current employment at Superior Airways.

I know there's a 5 year old thread in bush/specialty flying about the company, but that quickly turned into a history discussion. Though interesting, not exactly what I was hoping for.

Any current information about fleet, routes, pay, safety, living situation, advancement, etc. would be a huge help. Any past or present employees?

Cheers.

Well if they are still the same company I would suggest you stay away. I remember numerous times when I was in Northern Ontario and the weather was bad enough to park our planes, Superior would be heading out to who knows where. Gotta get the pop and chips delivered you know. Not to mention rumours of flying overweight, bs made up approaches in any weather etc. Really it's the Keystone of Ontario. Just do yourself a favour and stay away. If nobody goes to work for these kind of companies they will eventually have to close.

P.S.
Stay away.

When the company first started out they had the above reputation, but a little over a year ago I wanted some opinions because of a potential job. A few people in the know who had previously been pretty vocal condemning them actually came to their defence and said they had really been working hard to clean up and it was a different op nowadays than their previous reputation belied, so that's good news.

This is only second hand info now, and I can't speak any more about it other than I believe they're pretty busy. Hopefully someone closer to them can contribute, I'm also curious, and hope there are doing well.

If true that is good news. It's been a couple years or more since I've been around them.

Any current employees care to chime in?

I've witnessed the former (several years ago) and I've heard the latter. The word I heard was that once Northern Waterworks took over, it started changing for the better.

The negative comments appeared to be uncalled for.

I've flown the chips and pop, and dam near everything else out of
Red Lake, its just a small operation with a lot of regular business
thats been going on for the last 80 years.

Yep. About a year ago, I believe, the owner at the time sold the place. I remember he said to me once, word for word 'we have synthetic vision, we never miss.' i was floored. But then again not really.

Well, MM is long gone. That can't hurt. The CP has a bit of a short leash, but is steering in the right direction. Apply.

The couple people I know there seem to be enjoying their time in YRL. I think it's Safe to say that things have improved drastically since the change in ownership.

Hey pilots, I just came from there, and let me tell you. I respect MM, as nutty as everybody thinks he may have been, he took nothing and made it into an incredible company. Its a company where there is little to no ramp time, most of your hours are PIC time, and the pay is decent. The biggest thing that pisses me off about this thread is how people whine about flying in poor weather conditions. Come on guys, if you have any back bone you don't go flying if you're not comfortable! I turned down trips, and I went on trips that made me a better pilot today. Nothing I did was going to "kill me dangerous". And the overweight issue, come on, if you're flying the plane, its up to you weather or not to fly it legally. Superior always supported the rules and my personal opinions and personal comfort level even if it was a heated discussion, but never was I going to lose my job. Have a back bone guys/gals. Its a great time building opportunity and you will learn a ton about yourself and flying.

Oh, and the current CP is a beauty, as she worked for a very reputable company before coming to Superior, and the CP over the summer was also another stand up guy who moved on to larger planes and made an appropriate move for himself and his family.

Does anyone have a recent experience with them? Wondering what is the chance of living in Red Lake vs one of the more remote bases?

Remote bases?? I am pretty sure the only base they have is in Red Lake. I believe the King Air crews sometimes get hotels if they have flying that is somewhat far away from Red Lake. Would you be flying at the float operation or wheels??

I'm way more comfy on wheels but I suppose it's whatever they want me to do if I got hired.
