Anyone remember Cartierville airport?
I was mucking around on the Internet and found this site. I was living in Chomedy, Laval in the 60's until the age of 10. We were below one of the pattern routes to get to the training area. Vivid memories as a 6-9 year old identifying the wing platforms of Cessna's, Tri-Pacers, Cherokee's, etc. I really vivid memories of the CL-84 Dynavert going over the house one winter day.
Skim around the site and read some f the stories of airlines confusing Cartierville for Dorval. Fun reading.

Re: Anyone remember Cartierville airport?
My Father learned to fly at Cartierville airport in the mid 1950's. He learned at Laurentide Aviation when Jack Scholfield was running it. I remember airplane watching at the airport with my Dad as a young boy in the 1960's.
Laurentide moved to Cedars after Cartierville was shut down and I learned to fly there. My Instructor was Robbie Scholfield, Jack's nephew. Anybody know what he is doing now ?

Yup - grew up on Marlborough golf course (long gone) and watched those planes all day long. Also used to hear Canadair testing jets in their test house

I brought a new CL-215 out of there in 1986.ogopogo wrote:Yup - grew up on Marlborough golf course (long gone) and watched those planes all day long. Also used to hear Canadair testing jets in their test house

Re: Anyone remember Cartierville airport?
Thanks for bringing this up Bmc because it is the story of my life!
To make it short, since my English writing sucks, I grew up on St-Germain Boulevard while the Tiger Moth, TBM's, C-120/140 and Harvard turned base just over the house.
My best friend and I played in the aircraft, all of them, Laurentide's, Montreal Flying Club's, Canadair Flying Club, and we witnessed their VTOL CL84 hovering flight testing.
Did I ever say here that I saw a Helio Courrier landing backward? It was there when I was a kid.
We could hear from our bedrooms the Argus and Northstar runups all night long. It wasn't bothering me at all, go figure.
We played Jungle Jim in a Seabee I suspect our friend . flew when he was young. I only wish I could remember the call sign and tell him that was THE aircraft.
Many years later, I walked 20 minutes to Won-Del Aviation, ran by Tom Wong, for my flying lessons. First soloed at 16 and could turn base over my house, finally joining the guys turning base over my house during all my chilhood.
That place was my first "Airfield Killing" experience, just like the Edmonton kids are living now, with all the condos, shops and hotels instead of our grass taxiways and the aircraft tails sticking out over the sidewalk of Laurentian Boulevard.
You know what? I later found another cool flying school in the suburb, called Sainte-Thérèse Aviation and they killed it too not too long ago. The Real Estate guys stroke again!!!
Can I add...the first time I had to use English language was when my instructor, after starting the C-150A engine, handed the mike to me, saying "repeat after me: Cartierville Ground, this is Mike Kilo Quebec at Won Del, requesting taxi for a training flight over Chomedey", I did not understand what the tower lady said but I loved her voice.

Flew into Cartierville for EXPO 67. Arriving there. calling the tower in English with no response DAD pilot switched to 121.5. I guess when their bells and whistles went off they were very courteous after that. I was just newly licensed and just learning the ropes......

Being a youngster, Too young to know what it was, I referred to the Argus as the plane with the point in the back.
There was a yellow Otter on the north river that I could always see when crossing the LaChappel bridge. I would see it down the river, looking west. And then I would snap my head to the left and look at the wooden rollercoater at Belmont Park. Remember that?

Ah yes - Belmont Park! We'd drive by every weekend on the way to our cottage north of Lachute. Don't recall ever getting a chance to go on that big wooden coaster though.
We lived in Pierrefonds at the time (early 60's) and I bussed to high school at Sir Winston Churchill in Ville St. Laurent prior to Riverdale High School being built. At SWC the 104's at Canadair would rattle the windows and everything in the classroom would come to a halt for a couple of minutes.

Re: Anyone remember Cartierville airport?
My mother used to take me as a kid to sit near the threshold on Henri-Bourassa and watch Canadair test fly the Challenger for hours and hours. Sad day when they put up those hideous 500k$ townhouses in the 90s.
The company I work for's parking lot is literally adjacent to the threshold of 24L at Trudeau. I'm still guilty of stopping to watch planes in awe line up takeoff for a couple of minutes after work. If any of you are ever flying there, feel free to flash your landing lights as you turn on the runway
.
Happy holidays!

Re: Anyone remember Cartierville airport?
I sent that Cartierville link to a friend, now retired. Here's what he had to say.
Someone mentioned Won-Del Aviation. bmc were you at Nordair when they lost that C-46 north of Lac St. Jean? The f/o was one of the Wongs, Tom's son if I remember right.Fantastic!! I knew most of these controllers. I was witness to the crash of that Vertol contraption when on a display for the US military. It was landing at the intersection of 33/24 when both props went into fine pitch.
I was there when Fred Finny and Edna had that mishap with the flare gun. Fred was the owner of a Culver aircraft. It was made of wood.
Frances Oneson had a very sexy voice and whenever a new pilot arrived with an executive jet she would say" the wind is -- altimeter setting is --- check gear down and my eyes are blue and my phone number is ----. That guaranteed a bounce or two on landing.
Lots of stories about that place and time.

First off Rudder, your English is great. Better than my written French and I live in France/Suisse Romande.
I was trying to find the story in that airplane. I remember it as blue and yellow but can't remember the paint scheme.
I also have a memory of driving along St.Martin blvd, northbound, past the oval race track until we were in the country past Chomedy. I remember seeing a white and pale blue Piper Pacer or Vagabond type parked behind a house. All of these memories were before the age of 10. But, they lit the passion for airplanes.
