787 pictures from Everett
Hello, glad to on board with the AVCanada forum. I have been following a blog from Boeing's 787 build center in Everett, and requested the fellow to post some pictures of Air Canada's 787 as it came out of the factory, and he was kind enough, with extra effort. I'm including the links to the initial pictures, and the airframe, Boeing line160, should be out of the paint shop by now.

Beautiful, thanks Dave!
Side note, I've had the pleasure of working on CAE's 787 FFS. Lucky buggers

Stunning. Such a beautiful airplane. When I finish flight school I can't wait to fly this beauty for free. My parents live close.

Re: 787 pictures from Everett
I have been flying the 787 simulator over the past few weeks. In one of the training sessions we pitch up 20 degrees, roll it upside down and let go. It's quite a ride, but it rights itself on it's own. Obviously Boeing had me in mind when they designed it

Raven,
Do you mind sharing how it compares to other type`s you`ve flown.

Re: 787 pictures from Everett
That's a tough one. I've flown the DC-8, 727, L1011, 747 Classic, 747-400, 767, and all the Airbus products that Air Canada have. Comparing it to another type is difficult because of the advances in technology. I will tell you a few of the things I like about the 787 that other aircraft don't have.Bede wrote:Raven,
Do you mind sharing how it compares to other type`s you`ve flown.
1...Electronic Flight Bag. This is new to me. I know that the 777 has an EFB, but I didn't experience it until the 787. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do, it's great.
2...Heads up display (HUD). During the first couple of sims you're cursing it. By day 3, you can't do without it. Air Canada encourages us to use it in all phases of flight. You even look through it during taxi. During low visibility take-offs, if you venture more than 23 feet from the centre line of the runway, a flashing arrow pops up and points you back to the centre line.
3...Protections. I suppose Airbus' protections in Normal Law are more advanced. The 787 won't protect you as much as Airbus but sometimes that's a good thing. For instance, it was always said you couldn't stall an Airbus (Air France found out differently). You can stall the 787, however it is quite difficult. It does all it can to keep you from stalling it, but you can manually override the protections and it will stall.
4...I like the idea that I can climb straight to FL360 at the start of a 13 hour flight at MTOW. A couple of hours later I'm up to FL390.
5...Upset protections are incredible. Like I said earlier, roll it upside down and let go. It rights itself.
6...Vertical Situation Display. At the bottom of your ND is a Vertical Situation Display. It shows where you are in relation to a 3 degree glidepath. Initially I found it a bit confusing. Too much information. However, once you get used to it, it is wonderful. It is used on most approaches, but especially on the non-precision approaches.
7...Integrated Approach Navigation (IAN). In a nutshell, this turns all the non-precision approaches including GNSS into precision approaches. There is really only one switch to push for all approaches (the APPROACH switch). If you are flying an ILS your display is pretty much conventional. If you're flying a non-precision approach it builds you a glidepath which is captured and flown just like a glideslope.
There are a ton of other nice features. Too numerous to mention here. Battery issues aside, this aircraft truly is the future of aviation. I may even rethink my retirement plans (just kidding, I'm still going to be gone at age 60).

Impressive selection of "heavy iron" that you strapped your ass onto, Raven. Putting the B787 to one side, is there a type that you really enjoyed above others.
Re: 787 pictures from Everett
I really liked the 747-400, but that was in the past. I'm pretty sure the 787 is going to beat it.Old fella wrote:Impressive selection of "heavy iron" that you strapped your ass onto, Raven. Putting the B787 to one side, is there a type that you really enjoyed above others.

Re: 787 pictures from Everett
Nice. Probably gratifying that you will finish your career on what will be the very latest in design technology for long range aircraft and probably the best as well. Correct me if I am in error but not many of you left from the DC-8 era..........The Raven wrote:I really liked the 747-400, but that was in the past. This is a very interesting thread. I work for one of the manufacturers of the 787 FFS sim and most of the age enhanced gents here still say the 747 is still the best Boeing product. Perhaps because fly-by-wire is making many areas of simulation obsolete.Old fella wrote:Nice. Dave,
If you helped build Air Canada's 787 simulator, congratulations. You did a great job. Almost too realistic. We were at 35,000 feet when the instructor put in the first jet upset scenario. I wasn't expecting it. Holy crap!!! Violent and quick. We recovered ok, but not before uttering some expletives. It sure gets your attention. I was expecting the second one, but it was no less startling. Sure hate to have it happen for real on a dark and dirty night.

That upset recovery addition is very new to simulation, at least in the level D world. I'm almost positive CAE did the 787 sim for the Toronto training center.
Re: 787 pictures from Everett
Watching some of the video's of the 787 training is interesting, they were definitely trying to upset the flight, watching the control surface display, versus the pilot's impression without him looking at the display, of course, don't trust the inner ear. Not sure if the current 777 has the control laws of the 787, or just not at the same level yet, until 777X arrives.
Of course automation brings about many concerns, a multi-topic item all by it's self. Could be introduction of systems to blend in with the FAA's move into inter-plane traffic control.
I was doing a bit more digging around on AC's 787's being built, haven't seen any pix of the painted units yet, however just have some more info, on the 1st 3 airframes.

AC 787-833 C-GHPU s/n 35259 Boeing ZA612 line174
all GEnx-1B engined
with thanks to uresh at http://nyc787.blogspot.ca/ good build info, 787 trouble
also Dave, John and Josh at http://boeing-test-flights.blogspot.jp/
I see at nyc787 they have a country hit counter, with 80K+ from cdn's viewing, so hopefully I'm not duplicating this locally, I was looking thru forums for similar info, just wanted to post this info, making sure, someone might have an interest, Thx dave.
