Good morning...can anybody enlighten me on the acceptable dress for recip jumpseat on an Air Transat flight? Seems to be some confusion in my findings...thanks

I don't think it really matters for any airline, as long as you're not in pajamas or sweatpants and flip flops like the rest of the passengers.

Maybe I caught them on a bad day but Transat in YYZ can be pretty particular on that.

I am too young to have witnessed it but I hear back in the day people used to get dressed up in their best Sunday suits an dress for their flight! How times have changed. Most pax look like they just rolled out of bed.

Just for that, I'm going to wear an inverted Borat mankini every time I fly from now on.

I do find it quite amazing that someone should have to ask how to dress when someone is giving you a huge perk, such as a free ride, the least one can do is to dress respectfully. Maybe it just my old fashioned thinking...

I'll be honest: Half the time I'm on a jumpseat ticket I meet the dress code, the other half of the time I'm in jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers or hiking boots. No one has ever said a word to me about it. The trick is though, when the day comes that an uppity gate agent decides I'm not getting on the plane, I'll know it's my fault and will act accordingly.

I wouldn't worry about the specifics of the dress code as long as you are looking presentable. Far more important to worry about the serious fine print like getting the captain's permission ... even when the uppity gate agent tells you it isn't necessary.

That is a very "dangerous" game to play not to be dressed as per the company policy, and not just for you. The former company I was working for got a complaint from the carrier where a jumpseater wasn't dressed properly. That jeopardized our recip jumpseat agreement. The gate agent will probably let you in and while your back is turned, a phone call is made.

Personally, when I dress-up, I do it for social reasons. Otherwise I would walk naked but with socks on. You never know what you might step on to.

Is it not just a little bit shocking that some feel that asking an adult to dress in something other than jeans and a t-shirt is an unreasonable request in exchange for free or reduced rate travel?

In the US, you will not get the jumpseat (and that means a seat in the back) unless you are in uniform or business attire (that is not tie and jacket but simply dress pants, dress shoes, and a shirt with a collar). That is exactly how it should be in Canada.

Who said it was an unreasonable request?

I've personally witnessed (and benefitted) from someone not dressing to code and being denied boarding (thus granting me the final seat). Better safe than sorry I always dress business casual when traveling on privileges.... No point in chancing it and it isn't a big deal to me.
