Sunwing Split Scimitar Winglets

Post by Sunwing738 »

The first 2 Sunwing 737-800 have been fitted with the Scimitar winglets. The article says that the entire fleet will be updated by the end of May?
http://www.aerospaceonline.com/doc/sunw ... rvice-0001

-C-FEAK flew to Trois-Rivieres, QC (CYRQ) on Feb 24th and returned to Pearson the 28th and resumed scheduled flights the next day on Mar 1st.

-C-FLSW flew to YRQ from YUL on Sunday (Mar 16th) Should be back in the schedule in the next few days.

-C-GOFW flew to YRQ from YYZ on Monday (Mar 17th).

-C-GNCH, A new addition to the Sunwing fleet, flew from BFI to YYZ then on to YRQ on March 7. The aircraft had its first scheduled flight today (Mar 18th) from YHZ-VRA.

I'm assuming Trois is where the re-fitting is being done, does anyone know the schedule of which aircraft will be fitted and when? There are still 6 aircraft that need to be fitted.

Also C-GNCH was a surprise, didn't know WG was getting more aircraft, let alone a brand new one. Are they expecting deliveries of any other aircraft in the future?

Cool. That's the winglet for the MAX, didn't realize it was available as a refit.

C-GOWG looks already fitted with them. That leaves 5 more.

Wow, I had never heard of these before. They look kinda scary, like a stinger of a scary insect. I'm impressed at the 7% fuel saving, that seems pretty huge.

I also like how they say "We feel we have a responsibility as a market leader in Canada to continue investing in technology which reduces our environmental impact," come on lets face it...it's saving moneyand making shareholders happy, it's not about reducing environmental impact..it's just a nice side effect of it.

Here is the website http://www.aviationpartnersboeing.com/p ... _800_3.php These are an addition to the current blended winglets and save up 2.2% on 3000nm legs. The wingtips on the new MAX will be slightly different from these modified ones. 7% savings would be from a plane with no winglets at all.

Great link, interesting that the scimitar upgrades are only $555,000 USD while the upgrade from non-winglet to winglet is $1.04 million. Is that because the wing spars need to be re-constructed/re-positioned to hold the weight/force ect of the winglet?

I wonder if that mod deletes the massive depleted uranium weight installed on the front spar. It seemed like a break even at best installing all of that weight to try and reduce drag.

Very cool indeed, Also notice they are launching some longer range flights from Western Canada (Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver) to Punta Cana D.R (YEG,YYC and YVR) and Liberia C.R (YEG and YVR) seems those are out of the 738's range. Are they wet leasing some longer range metal for winter 2014/15?

Both YEG-PUJ and YEG-SJO are well within the range of a B737-800 w/split scimitar winglets.

The original plan was to wet lease a Boeing 767-200 from Dynamic Airways to do the the YEG, YYC and YVR to PUJ, LIR, and MBJ. Unfortunately the deal fell through when the CTA would only allow them to wet-lease 5 aircraft this winter, (They had applied for 6) 2 Thomson Airways birds and 3 Travel Service Birds.

I also read the Scimitar can improve payload by 2,500 lbs or the overall range of the aircraft by 75nm. Sunwing states their max range is 3721nm but it doesn't state load factors. The aircraft has the legs to do YVR-PUJ, the longest route, but coming home with the westerly winds would probably require a fuel stop. Plus I wouldn't want to spend 7 hours on a 737!

C-GNCH has the new Boeing sky interior...

She is a beautiful bird!

On a side note I will be flying Sunwing flight WG762 from YYZ-SXM on April 17th. Does anyone know which aircraft is scheduled to operate that flight? I'm hoping it is GNCH but it seems to be out West right now doing flights out of Vancouver. If not one of the aircraft with the new Scimitar Winglets would be awesome!
