Re: Three Words Only
Just (re-)reading the book. Hilarious
caricature of a pilot.
RottenTomatoes gave the movie 94%,
despite the fact that it bombed when it
was released.

Re: Three Words Only
The book taught me all fighter pilots are abusive, alcoholic scumbags. Hilarious, though.

Re: Three Words Only
Two of the best books I've ever read about
speedy little airplanes and people who fly
them:
"Fighter Pilot" by Robin Olds
"Viper Pilot" by Dan Hampton
If you are interested in what happened in
the 2nd half of the 20th century:
"The Fighter Pilot Who Changed The Art of War"
by John Boyd. You might not have heard of the
OODA loop but you probably have heard of the
F-15, F-16, F-18 and A-10. You know - useful,
affordable aircraft, which are completely different
from what is being produced today.

Boyd was later assigned to the USAF Weapons School, where he became head of the Academic Section and wrote the tactics manual for the school.
He was dubbed "Forty Second Boyd" for his standing bet as an instructor pilot that beginning from a position of disadvantage, he could defeat any opposing pilot in air combat maneuvering in less than 40 seconds.
In January 1980 Boyd gave his briefing Patterns of Conflict at the U.S. Marines AWS (Amphibious Warfare School). This led to the instructor at the time, Michael Wyly, and Boyd changing the curriculum, with the blessing of General Trainor.
Boyd is credited for largely developing the strategy for the invasion of Iraq in the Gulf War of 1991.
