NavCanada E-Cap

Post by schleprock »

I just noticed that NavCanada is now selling the Cap and Cap Gen in electronic format, labeling it "E-Cap". In reading it seems that they are providing the Cap in PDF format, just as they did in Feb-Apr 2010 when they pooched the publication and had to then provide them electronically.

I realize the most people here probably use Jeppesen plates for their electronic plates, but for those that used the paper CAP manuals, do you intend to switch, or stay with the hard copy manual?

Also, does anyone have any insight into the requirement
"This is an official aeronautical publication and is suitable for air navigation purposes
To use these instrument procedures in-flight they must be printed using a Laser of Inkjet Colour printer with the following attributes:
Up to 4800 optimized dpi colour (up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi colour and 1200 Input dpi)"
? That is, why do they have to printed in colour when the publication is in black/white, and also, why do they have to be printed?

Same here,
I wonder who buys from Nav Canada when you can get all Can subscription for $150 per year from FF.

ForeFlight Mobile for Canada ($149.99/yr per pilot)
Includes all software and data updates, NAV CANADA VNC and VTA charts, High and Low IFR Enroute charts, CAP terminal procedures, weather, airport Directory, flight planning and filing, hazard advisor, annotations, and cloud document management and storage.

I guess that I was probably the only dumb schmuck buying the paper copies. Thanks for the heads up on ForeFlight Mobile for Canada. I am going to look into it.

I am curious how you got that deal? Foreflight standard is $74.99 but is only the basic American version. The Canadian subscription is $149.99.

I second this question... Where do you get it for $79? Can I use the American subscription and use the American VTA, VNC, etc. similar to skyvector?

Fltplan.com offers an app that gets you complete Canada / US charts all for free.

Fltplan GO is the app. I have put it on our iPads for testing and while it's not quite as slick as Foreflight, the price is right. It says that Canadian approach charts are even georeferenced (ie it'll show your plane on the charts if you have an iPad w. GPS), though I haven't had the opportunity to try that out yet.

I have and it works great - pretty good for a free app. Starting to wonder if/when ForeFlight will catch up and will they start to lose subscribers as FltPlan.com sure has the edge on pricing.

FltPlan Go doesn't have the VTA's though... Yet? I expect they're coming eventually.

I am testing the fltplan GO app as well and I can tell you that they are slowly adding competition to FF. I have CDN subscription ($150) for FF. I would not be surprised if fltplan.com start charging as soon as they get their user interface and some additional features in order.

I am considering these electronic formats, as I have a summer trip planned, and will need some new charts. I have not used either of the softwares mentioned here. I'm going to buy an iPad to run whatever I get for software. May I impose on the group for opinions (like hoping for a bit of rain from a TCU?) as to what system requirements/capability/memory I should look for in the iPad? Mini or full sized? Memory size needed? How do I know if the Ipad has the GPS for the georeferencing?

I presume I try the "fltplan GO" app first, and save the Foreflight subscription cost? I'm only looking for Canadian publications...

All iPads with 3G/4G have GPS built-in. Wifi-only iPads do not have a built-in GPS. If you have a wifi-only unit you can buy a small external GPS called a BadElf that works okay, but if you haven't bought an iPad you might as well get one with 3G/4G capability. Your cel phone provider will likely let you piggyback your cel phone data plan on the iPad for a few extra bucks a month. For example, I have 6 gigs data per month on my iPhone through Bell. For an extra $10/month, they put a sim card in my iPad and when it uses data it comes out of my iPhone data plan allowance.

That being said, the charts are pretty big so you will usually want a wifi connection when downloading them. A full sub of Foreflight is about 15 gigabytes, same thing for Fltplan GO. If you only want Canadian stuff then obviously the storage requirement will be far less.

Sporty's has a whole website dedicated to iPad Apps. http://ipadpilotnews.com/

Lots of great info on there but specifically have a read at this article: http://ipadpilotnews.com/2014/01/ipad-buy/

For what its worth - I have the latest (Gen 4) iPad Mini with Retina Display 3GB - Wi-Fi/3G/4G
More than enough for all the charts/plates I need.
I used to have a full sized iPad but found it too bulky in my small cockpit.

Hope this helps.
