Taxes and TC/exam fees

Post by iSight »

How do you successfully claim written/flight test fees, medical exam fees and the TC sticker fee, and where on the tax forms does this info go? CRA seems to dispute the claim.

For the last few years, I have been claiming them on line 229 (other employment expenses). I fill out form T777 and put all my expenses on line 9270. I have been claiming my medical and the $55 Transport Canada administration fee, and have not been questioned or audited on it yet (I think it has been 5 years now).

Edit to add:

You must be making income as a pilot to make this claim. If you are still a student, you should try to claim these under education. Your flight school should be able to help with this. If you are in between school and an actual flying job, the area gets a little grey; however, you can claim it under one or the other, as long as you can convince someone at CRA that the end goal is a Pilot job and these expenses are required to attain that goal.
