Aviation Medical Costs
Good morning all,
I recently did my category I medical and I have to say I was quite surprised by the costs. I hadn't done one in about 10 years so maybe things have changed.
So I paid the doctor's office $188.00 and I thought that would be it. Not exactly cheap. Then about 3 weeks later I got an invoice from transport canada for $55 for "processing of medical certificate".
So it costs $188 + $55 = $243 to do a medical!?
I had enough problems with TC just trying to get my ATPL renewed. It took them like 5 months to process. Now this?

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Yup. Just the way it is unfourtunately. My doctor here is $100 cash only, but everyone gets stuck with the $55 from TC. You can claim the cost on your income tax though.
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Just did my CAT 1. $160 plus TC fees, and the doc has been increasing rates over the past few years. He's a pilot too which kind of bugs me, but he's my family doc too so I roll with the punches for now.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I pay Cdn$370 for both TCA Cat 1 and
FAA Class 1 medicals, I guess once a
year now.
I don't pay the TCA $55 fee.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Doc here in Thunder Bay charges 100$.
I miss Dr. Lower... his price was whatever he felt like charging that day, usually $30 or $40. Still a deal at $100 I guess. Recently had to get my drivers license medical done and that cost me $170.00 which is apparently a "Standard Book Rate" so I was told...

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Since we can have a 12month medical over 40 years for a 2 crew airplane, one particular doctor in CYQB doubled his fees...

The Best safety device in any aircarft is a well-paid crew.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I think the average across Canada is between $90-$145 on average + the $55 fee which as Andrew said and I agree with, I don't pay it.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Some clown in Mississauga is charging almost 3000$. You have to do a full spectrum medical exam followed by a TC exam for a total of 4-5 hrs. Needless to say I did it, pretty good deal, my career is over but it was worth it.
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I recently did my CAT 1. Doc told me I would cost me $100 cash to do it at his house. Younger foreign pilot. We talked
flying stuff, I told him I had to go to the car for the money. He said forget it. I left him what cash I had in my pocket , enough to buy a case a beer. I'll be back!!!

What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
100$ cash get the list on TC website.
I Like the old docs, they are cool and convinient on scheduling.
Went once in a Mtl city center clinic, charged me 180$, went through three nurses
... Cute ones though and finished with the crazy intense doc.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
TC fees I wait a couple of years... When it looks big I get to pay it, no sweat
about it.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
How long before they clue in and tie payment of back dues to getting your booklet renewed?checkremarks wrote:I think the average across Canada is between $90-$145 on average + the $55 fee which as Andrew said and I agree with, I don't pay it.
Colonel, do you have something regulatory-related in your hip pocket to justify not paying it? Has anyone ever come out looking for payment? What's the penalty for not paying it?
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I heard a rumour saying some guy in Qb had a recovery agent at it's door. Could be bullshit too, it would require TC to "work" and work a process... Hmmm would be interresting to dig that info knowing if it's true or not! Good question? Do u guys don't pay it? I would rather not to, it really pisses me offAirFrame wrote:How long before they clue in and tie payment of back dues to getting your booklet renewed?checkremarks wrote:I think the average across Canada is between $90-$145 on average + the $55 fee which as Andrew said and I agree with, I don't pay it.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
This one in UL charge $500.00...younowho...hell with that.
I'M going back to local, was quoted $40.00 today.
Some docs are trying to import the American disease,
where hospitals charge you $5,000.00 for a ten cents vinyl hose
and a one week hospital stay may cost $500,000(it did to me...
well, to my insurance...no operation, just a TPe treatment)

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Here in the states I was getting my Class 1 medical for $50 and it lasted for two years, couldn't be a flag carrier captain after 6 months. In Canada the same medical, cat 1 - over 40, and time frame was costing over $600....... Hmmm. Yes but you have "free" medical coverage.

How high is up?How long before they clue in and tie payment of back dues to getting your booklet renewed?
I am happy to discuss the $55 "fee" at
the Transportation Tribunal, Federal Court,
Federal Court of Appeals, Tax Court,
Family Court or Traffic Court. Been to
all of them before, I'm happy to visit
them again before I check out.
Canadians need to grow a spine, instead
of running and hiding in fear from their
government.
Like the Ontario "Career College Act"
shutting down FTU's.
Spiro Agnew.
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Ontario "Career College Act" is scary reading. Most of which is not really applicable to Flight Training.
Now, the $55 medical fee.
I "forgot" to pay it when I renewed my medical and they slapped a hold on my income tax return and it got a mention at the credit bureau
which all had to be cleared up before I could get a mortgage approved.
My last medical was a US FAA medical, that cost $100 US CASH, I got a copy of that medical signed by the doctor
and for $55 my medical was renewed , with a local ECG ordered by my family doctor that was somehow paid for by OHIP.
One medical I did at an upstate NY doc took about two minutes from start to finish while he chewed on a fat cigar,
he had a line up of pilots all handing him $100 CASH and he only took ca$h. He had a kind of sweat on his brow that
reminded me of a dentist / aerobatics student that died a few weeks after his flight from a stroke.
Later I went to get another medical from this fast cash doctor and could not get one.
It turned out he died of a stroke a week after he did my last medical.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I sometimes think I should charge the medical examiners for giving them the privilege of even looking at such a perfect specimen as I.
I also eat lots of asparagus the night before for the tinkle test, I think it helps.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
anyone know any rather 'cost efficient' doctors in the Toronto area?
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
I have never paid the 55 fee
but after a few years when the outstanding grows they steal it from my income tax return

Anyone can do it, I just do it better ! ! !
Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Thiebert now charges $80 and for the ECG he sends you to this Life Labs place that charges $35. So $115 all in plus parking at both places. Anywhere cheaper in Tbay now? What's Trusdale charge and does he have an ECG machine?lownslow wrote:Next time give Dr. Thibert a call, he charges sixty bucks cash.Taiser wrote:Doc here in Thunder Bay charges 100$.

Re: Aviation Medical Costs
Nope, he sent me to LifeLabs for the EKG. Charges 100$, at least he did a year and a bit ago. Nice guy, no issues and doesn't go out of his way to FIND something wrong with you like a doc I went to in Dryden years ago...Thiebert now charges $80 and for the ECG he sends you to this Life Labs place that charges $35.
