CYYC runway walk
Today we walked the new runway at YYC. Despite the weather it was fantastic. A great big THANKS to all the volunteers who made it happen. It was run so efficient and smooth. Every static display was great, that 787 is only 3 weeks old and is gorgeous. My favourite was the T-28 Trojan, had a great talk with the pilots. Glad to see Calgary come out and take this opportunity of a life time and be able to walk on the longest runway in Canada. Anyone else lucky enough to do this?
Re: CYYC runway walk
I was there too! Had a blast! I was a little disappointed that the public was not allowed to enter the 787 (or any plane for that matter), but I understand why. As a pilot to be in a couple months, it would've been awesome and motivational for me to sit in the front seat and have a chat with the pilots, but despite that, it was still pretty damn cool going for the walkaround! Had a good talk with the rouge pilots and saw some pretty awesome displays. I loved the RCMP PC-12. Not too many people can say they've walked on a 14000' runway!
Cheers

I took my Bell 47 down and had several hundred kids...and a few big kids sit in it.
I ask for and got to fly the length of the runway...took me over 5 minutes to get to the end and back!

I have some video as well. I'll see if I can edit it down to something a little smaller and post it later this week.

Does that make the Pitts a GGILF?
Man, I wish I knew this was going on... I would have shot out there to take a look see.

Is that good thing or bad thing? I guess it would depend on how old you areColonel Sanders wrote:Flying a Bell 47 (in production 1946-1974)

My Bell 47G-4 is one of the "younger" ones built in 1964 but its still older than I am.

P.S. I had to google GILF.

Can't wait to mark that bitch up with rubber and kiss flow delays goodbye should have been done 15 years ago.
Re: CYYC runway walk
I'm curious, what's the purpose of the taxiways to nowhere on the east side of the new runway?

Keeping the options open for a future parallel runway. This way if it does happen and construction starts, the fact that those portions of taxiway are already built around 17L/35R will minimize the impact of construction (closure) on that runway.ditar wrote:I'm curious, what's the purpose of the taxiways to nowhere on the east side of the new runway?

The same reason why Calgary has massive interchanges already laid out in the middle of cow pastures....

I can totally see a day YYC has 17L/C/R like DFW and the likes.thenoflyzone wrote:Keeping the options open for a future parallel runway. ppffft! year right. Do you honestly think the ACC will have a hope in hell of accommodating any more traffic with 4 runways than they did with 3? They'll find a way to bog the new arrivals down with flow control to justify more manpower, or wages, or days off....They have decades of practice at it and I'm sure are way ahead of us...

You are proof positive that some pilots, very few, I'll add, are utterly clueless. We can always count on you to pipe up with the same old drivel. Your routine is painfully tired and in need of new material, though. If you don't know the advantages of having parallel vs crossing runways, then maybe you should put training wheels back on the plane you fly. (God help us all if it's larger than a C152)

Re: CYYC runway walk
my understanding was that as soon as the 35R is open, 35L closes for install of centerline lighting, resurfacing, etc etc.... wrote:Can't wait to mark that bitch up with rubber and kiss flow delays goodbye should have been done 15 years ago.

Flow control will only cease when Nav Canada has hired the appropriate number of controllers to handle the increase of movements.. wrote:Can't wait to mark that bitch up with rubber and kiss flow delays goodbye should have been done 15 years ago.
