Air Algerie plane missing: Contact lost with passenger jet carrying 110 passengers over Africa

Algerian aviation authorities have lost contact with an Air Algerie aircraft carrying 110 passengers over Africa, according to reports.
The passenger jet lost contact with authorities 50 minutes after take off, the airline said.
"Air navigation services have lost contact with an Air Algerie plane Thursday flying from Ouagadougou to Algiers, 50 minutes after takeoff," Air Algerie told the APS news agency.
Spanish private airline company Swiftair confirmed to the Reuters news agency that it had no contact with its MD-83 aircraft operated by Air Algerie, which it said was carrying 110 passengers and six crew.
An Algieran official had earlier said it was an Airbus A320.
Flight AH5017 was en route from from Ouagadougou in west African country Burkina Faso to Algiers, Algeria.
Air Algerie said an "emergency plan" had been initiated.

just read a report that Air Algerie AH5017 crashed in Niger with 110 passengers and 6 crew.

Interesting. I wonder if this "Stage 4" hush kit has been around long? Could it have contributed to the event in heavy rain conditions? Any MD80 people know anything about this hush kit STC?

Wow, another one toast. I wonder what the travelling public thinks of the safety of the airline industry these days? Oh, I know, Canada has a stellar record, that is if you don't count the outrageous 737 crash at Resolute and a few notable screw ups here and there, but I am talking world wide.
