AvCanada's favorite C-182
Been a while since I did this.
So what's everyone's opinion on the best year and model of the big brother of the 172.
At just over zero hours per year it's cheaper to rent but I might fly more often again someday. Since I'm around 250lbs and the kids are still growing. I would need extra capacity for fishing gear.
And... GO!

I quite fancy a new turbo diesel one. Do you have a half-mil?
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: AvCanada's favorite C-182
I looked into this myself recently, as I'd been thinking of buying a 182. However I now realise I can't really afford it, and a 180hp 172 would probably be more practical and provide almost as good performance for a lot less cost. I don't think I can really afford a 172 either...the problem seems to be that I spend too much time reading avcanada and not enough time actually earning money.
Anyway, as far as I can see the sweet spot seems to be the mid/late 70s models, N and P model years. From Q they introduced high compression cylinders which seem to be slightly more troublesome. On the other hand the Q and later models have metal fuel tanks rather than bladders. I'd want one with a CHT gauge, and ideally a carb temp gauge.

Bladder tanks are somewhat safer in a crash, and leak, a bit. Wet wings don't leak as often - but when they do, they're really really difficult to fix.

Get a 1955 or earlier model. By that I mean, get a 180. They're faster, lighter, roomier and have more class.

P model. You get the wide cabin, good seats, a modern panel, the "R" engine, and the radios are old enough someone has probably updated them allready

If I did this would have been the, "Check out my bird dog!" Thread posted in the video section featuring me flying it as BatDad.photofly wrote:I quite fancy a new turbo diesel one. Do you have a half-mil?

They're also three times the price of a 182.frozen solid wrote:Get a 1955 or earlier model. By that I mean, get a 180. They're faster, lighter, roomier and have more class.

There is no wrong answer. It's your favorite 182. Could be the most expensive or least.
I can't remember if I did one of these for the 180.

As you mentioned in your initial post, "If it flies, or floats, it's cheaper to rent!"
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

It depends on usage. We bought a 12 foot aluminum boat for the cost of 5 days rental and it came with a 4.5 hp engine. So far she floats perfectly.
