I can still hear the roar of the Pratt & Whitney R-985 and remember watching the water spray move back on the float as we lifted off Cooking Lake in June 1971. I was 4 years old riding in the right seat of my fathers Stinson SR9.

Mine was 1966, aged 8, also an Air Canada Vickers Viscount, but YUL - YYR. Loved every minute of it, and loved it all over again on the return flight a year later.bmc wrote:Air Canada Vickers Viscount in 1969 at age 11. Dorval-Ottawa-Val D'or-Earlton.
Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
Mum sent me for a ten minute flight in a Hughes 300 at a Newmarket fair when I was 8. I was hooked from then on. Summer camp in Temagami was fly in, so I'd spend a month with 185's coming and going, and that sealed it.

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
When I was a little guy there was some sort of Santa Claus flight. My relatives went without me because I had a cold. Pretty upset probably unreasonably so but I was a child.
Later At career days in school. I was told, "You can't be a pilot. Your grades are not good enough to go to College." Much less upset, I shrugged it off and went on with becoming a well paid factory worker. Did not need much education to watch machines make things.
I found out later in life that there is a rumour about being able to be a commercial pilot even without a masters degree in mathematics. I still don't know for certain if there is any truth to it, since only one person has claimed to have achieved such a thing and he's on here, so it could be anyone just pretending to be a pilot.
I digress?
I looked into it and found out about a thing called a fam flight. Can not remember my age. Around twenty. My weigh in has also been forgotten, 215lbs?
The airplane I do remember, a mighty Cessna 150!! I have never tried to get in one again but think my skeleton has grown, I doubt I could fit with another adult.

Boeing 727. Played a home-and-away series with a hockey team from Iqaluit when I was a kid (mid 80s).
Went on to fly the same plane later on in life.

Piper Cub. (I think) Had no electrics. I would have been around 8 or 9. Grass field that is now mostly gone and not usable
I remember doing a loop and was amazed by the way you could see the colour change of the water of the lake we flew over as it got deeper.

Ron Greenwood's Beech Sundowner, Oct 8th, 1976 for my 10th birthday. I was flying over the south end of Lake Winnipeg and yeah, it was fun

Drinking lots of coffee lately, at a nice safe jungle desk, wishing I were flying......

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
CP Air Boeing 727 from Calgary to Vancouver. I think the thing I remember most about the flight was the meal. At age 5 I didn't have a taste for the fish, the potatoes were ok, but the little round thing of custard for desert was simply amazing. And we had real metal cutlery, and it was served on china. I was priviledged enough to get the window seat, the view of the Rockies was inconcievable to 5 year old eyes, and the whole experience was somewhat overwhelming. I don't think I'd get on an airliner to go anywhere for another 25 years. Its never lived up to that first time since.
We can't stop here! This is BAT country!

Republic Sea Bee, 1947 Lake Nipigon, Ont.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
I was mid teens when my dad hauled the family out to a local fly-in in an area we had recently moved to. Some of us, me included, got a short free tour in a C-172. My dad never had a license but he used to go flying sometimes as a spotter on fire patrols or animal surveys. While I was originally taking lessons, about 30 years ago, he got me a ride-along in a private plane down to Utah and I got to be the un-logged auto-pilot for most of the flight. I really regret not finishing my license in time to take him up.

CF-BIM was the family sedan for many years and is still in private hands. Stinson SR9 C-FOAY was donated to the Alberta Aviation Museum by Chess Mcconnell's widow in the early 1990's.Tom H wrote:Remember the tail number?J31 wrote:I can still hear the roar of the Pratt & Whitney R-985 and remember watching the water spray move back on the float as we lifted off Cooking Lake in June 1971. Thought there might have been a connection.
And yes our was donated by the Mcconnell family (thank you to the family once again) and will soon be in final assembly after many years

Mine was an Air Canada or Canadian Airlines twin jet of some variety when I was 4, flying to Vancouver. I remember getting a cockpit visit (they had a gum dispenser!) and unwrapping a toy car on the plane. My second ride was in an Air Cadet glider followed by a trip in a Stearman at the Ottawa aviation museum.

1987 El Al 747 to and from Israel. If we're counting pre-natal flights then 1985 El Al Israel to YYZ.
First aircraft I had the pleasure of controlling was C172 out of CYLS (formerly CNB9) was given the 1 hr intro for my Bar Mitzvah in 1999.

Late 1980's, Air Atlantique DC-3 at the North Weald Airshow (UK). My brother bought me the flight, was then upset I did not seem more excited, until I explained I had never flown before and was somewhat nervous (mainly worried about getting airsick).
Then went to school, joined the skydiving club and was proud to say that I then had 80 aircraft takeoffs and no landings. (well, maybe 2).
First commercial flight was an Air Canada 747 in 1994 when I came to Canada for a Job Interview.
Was told at the age of 14 that I was colour blind, and could never be a Pilot (one of the en-mass screenings at school). I believed that until I was 38 and found out the truth. First aeroplane I controlled was a C172 out of Guelph.
Now just over 200 hours and learning tailwheel. Kid just got her license, so is a few years ahead of me.
