Number of pilots in Canada

Post by Tom H »

Having beat my head against the wall on the Statistics Canada and Transport Canada webiste for a few hours and not finding anything I am reaching out for some advise.

Any one recommend a source for the number and types of pilots in Canada that is newer than 2006?

I would like to see how many pilots are currently licensed
- Commercial
- Private
- Ultralight
- Glider
- other

Appreciate any help or suggestions

I suspect private & Ultra-light are one category as the PPL entitles you to both... from what I recall?

This report by ATAC has some info that might be what you're looking for, thoug it focuses on commercial operations, it does have some numbers for CPL pilots in 2010.

I think COPA had the stats for Pilots in their news rag a while back. I'll check my back issues, but I think they publish the numbers every January in an annual blurb on Pilots and planes in Canada...

Hi Tom...

We had a similar discussion here earlier this year, also without much luck:

AvCanada: Licensing stats

At the time, I had suggested that the information used to be available on the Air Policy site of TC and, indeed, I have found a page that contains the title "Statistics and Data". However, as noted in the other discussion, the GoC program of reducing the number of federal websites appears to have resulted in the removal of that information from the web as there is no longer an active link associated with that title:

Transport Canada: Air Policy

I can't believe how difficult it is...both stats/can and transport

Last sited number I found was 2008 on wiki, but the reference link is now gone so I don't know if it's useful? Given the time spread likely not.

Tried following the link back to TC source and that hit a wall so I tried searching on variations of the link on the TC website and no luck at all.

When did this information become so secret?

It's probably not secret at all, it's just become impossible to navigate TC's website due to the restructuring, and impossible to find in Google because the search indexes still contain all the old Transport pages that no longer exist and the new pages haven't built up any hit points to make them show up more prominently in the search results.

Actually, I suspect that there will not be any "new" pages, considering the government's stated intent to reduce the amount of information/pages available online. So, while information may not be secret, it's also not readily available/accessible anymore. After all, by 2016, there will no longer be a Transport Canada website - or any other departmental website either.

One of the interesting results of the implementation of the blue Aviation Document booklet is that the government now has a handle on how many active pilots are out there because there is an expiry date on the booklet. Before there was only the medical data that was attached to a licence that had no expiry date.

For persons wondering how long it is taking to get an Aviation Document renewed, I just renerwed mine and it was in my mail in two weeks from submission...pretty good service IMHO.

I wonder how many are licenced sea-plane pilots? It seems that guys with experience are out of stock.
